What he did was to slam the crawfish violently against the tree limb a dozen times or so, and then swallow it whole. Ouch. I've always had a tough time getting close to Belted Kingfishers, and this is a fairly large crop as the IQ shows, but I thought it was worth sharing. I can't believe he ate the whole thing.

Me too! I've never gotten this close. I've even tried blinds and remote triggers.

It's fun to see the image and learn about the behavior. Aesthetically it's not very exciting, but that's not critical.
You might consider some local adjustments to darken the white neck feathers.

Of course he ate he went though all that trouble to catch it.

What a great story, Bill. Thanks for sharing. I think the image held up pretty well and so glad you shared it. This is also my nemesis bird.

This is my favorite type of image. Great capture. The IQ seems good enough and the prey is stunning! The out-of-focus small tree branches in front of the bird are not ideal but I would be VERY happy if this was mine. TFS

What a great catch for you and the KF!!
Also great is the fact that the crayfish is facing us.
I agree with your self critique but sometimes it is better to have a an unusual scene captured than perfect IQ.

Bill, great image and it tells a story. Who could have thought he could swallow it whole? The image held up well. The BG is a tiny bit distracting, but there is really not much you can do. TFS. Loi

Hi Bill, thats a fair catch, and Im surprised he managed to get it down, there again, they are capable of swallowing most things they catch. Great that the crayfish is against the smooth part of the BG.
