Default Incoming - Ring Billed Gull

Gulls are always good on a dull Day. They provide the much needed action when the "exotic" pelicans just sit and preen the WHOLE day.

The cormorants keep catching fish and the gulls just keep mobbing and robbing them. This one is announcing that he is on his way to raid such a catch.

5d3+700, ISO 500, 1/3000, f8, HAndheld. Canvas added to the left of frame. Clipped right wing reconsrtucted. pretty much as shot. eyes sharpened slightly and selectively

    what do you all think?

Love the open bill and the colors and pattern of the water. I am guessing that you did not pan fast enough....

I like the dynamic pose and sharp head plus the open beak, nice BG too. it's a bit tight for me, did you have to add canvas on the left? there is a white vertical line right above gull's right wingtip.

Pretty sure I can hear him calling from here. The open bill is great for adding interest. Also the well highlighted head snaps my eye right to it every time. Good eye contact and nicely sharp.

Love the open bill, fanned tail and eyes glaring right at the viewer.

Amol, a very eye-catching shot! The strong diagonal is very nice. Both the bright color of the open mouth, and the intense stare right at your camera, really hold my attention. While the composition may be a touch tight, I don't think I'd change that, as the photo is all about the head of the bird, and the head is already relatively small in the frame.

Great action photo! I like the open bill and the bird sharpness. I would add some more space left so that the bird will be symmetrical in the frame and remove the small white vertical line just above the left wingtip. TFS

By popular request, I added canvas left. Generally working with textured water makes things tough but here the water was just o-o-f enough to make the task simple. I used the flipped layer technique from APTATS II to add the new canvas that is actually from the right side of the original frame.... That plus a regular Layer Mask. For final clean up I used the Patch Tool and Content Aware Fill to lose the signature . It worked quite well. Those last two and tons more from my Digital Basics File, an instructional PDF that is sent via e-mail. DB includes my complete digital workflow, dozens of great Photoshop tips, several different ways to expand canvas, all of my time-saving Keyboard Shortcuts, Quick Masking, Layer Masking, and NIK Color Efex Pro basics, image clean-up techniques, Digital Eye Doctor, and tons more.

ps: I used the Patch Tool to get rid of the whitish area just above the bird's right primaries.
