Taken from back garden hide, the chaffinches are still very cautious about approaching the feeder, this one was just biding his time in a nearby conifer I planted last year.
    All C&C welcome.

Hi Jonathan, lovely subject, cracking detail of the Chaffinch set against a BKG that separates the subject well. Nice techs and I like the idea of using the conifer as it's something different for a 'perch'. Not sure if it's possible, but moving slightly more to the left may help exclude the small part of the branch and sprig creeping in top left, not ideal I feel, WDYT? You could simply crop some off the top, but it then may become too tight and then 'prune' out the sprigs, or just remove it all together which is quite easy, just depends on your ethics.

Excellent detail and lovely bird Jonathon. If it were mine I might remove the small bits of conifer top and bottom on the LHS but it is still a super image. Great clean BG as well

I l; like it lots, and I like the perch you got for this fella. I would tone down the brighter parts of it below though as those highlights pull my eye there. Anymore cropping will render the subject too large in the frame so I would just clone out the extra (just the needles). Subject looks great, well detailed, and perfect HA.

In my eyes the bird is perfect. Light, details, pose, ... . The BG-color is great.
Only the perch in the BG. I think if this was my image I would remove him.

    Hi Jon
Asaid the bird is spot on. Its just that perch in the back that draws my eye- especially the top bit Just my personal view- others will feel differently of course.
    Still a great Chaffy pic.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I agree the perch is less than Ideal - he had many to choose from with nice clean backgrounds but he felt more secure here with that messy tree trunk behind him, the sparrows have been around so everyone is being super careful at present. My angle is about as far left as I can get, I did consider doing some cloning but I think it would have been a lot of work - better wait for a better perch methinks.

    Hi Jon,
The bird looks so great on this shot that I would do the cloning suggested if it were mine. I wish it were.

Gorgeous little bird, well posed on a complex perch. The soft light quality and your working distance/long lens technique yielded some sweet details on the subject. Yeah, what's not to like for sure!

Hi Jon, tack sharp mate, and in turn the detail just stands out so well. Love the colours too. I think you have some gardening to do.

I love the pose, the bg and the perch. The IQ is off-the-charts good; you couldn't have processed this any better. Your images remind me that backyards can indeed be useful.
