    Default Northern Hawk Owl

    Attached Images Attached Images

This northern hawk owl was photographed a couple of winters ago in the sax zim bog of Northern Minnesota. The perch is set up, live mice were fed to the owl as part of the photography process on this one. SonyA300, Sigma50/500, iso400, f9, 1/320, fill flash, manual exposure/spot metered, adjusted contrast and saturation, crop, USM. Comments and critiques welcome. (The feeding was done in the woods away from the road on this one).
    Regards,
    Shawn Zierman

Hi Shawn, I have never seen this species before, and what a great image to show him off. Great eye contact, and you have brought all the detail so well, not to mention the colours. Sharpness spot on, and the BG compliments the hawk owl nicely.

I bet he posed for time and time again if you were feeding him live mice.

Great shot, Shawn. Lovely brown palette with the eyes setting it off. Nice perch and comp. And of course a beautiful owl. Amazing the power of a few mice.

Like the sharpness, those eyes, and that speckled forehead. The perch could have been worse, could have been better. I am OK with the snow at the bottom but the vertical band and a half are distracting...

Lovely raptor, I am fine with the perch as it looks quite natural, in fact, if you don't mention it then it would have been impossible to determine if it was part of a set up or not. Love light and focus. Yes, the white snow is a bit bright and distracts but could be easly fix in PS.

Quite the intense stare, and I love the perch and subject matching colours. BG has beautiful matching tones too but a just few too many brighter spots IMO...still an amazing image with lots of intensity. Thanks for the bait disclosure.

excellent light details and eye contact, I wonder if you had time to get him on a more handsome perch while you had this unique opportunity

Doesn't get much better than this, Shawn. Beautiful bird on a gorgeous setup. I actually think your choice of perch works perfectly. Terrific work!
