Sorry for posting another PB. Just love this chap up there. The story you all know.
LR the usual for this one, which is a bit different. The moon I have done with the brush in LR . PS CS6 Levels, curves, dodge/burn, Sharpening in CS6 as well.
Have added the watermark in a brighter area that you can see the RHS dark side. Last time some had a little prob with the dark RHS
Taken when moon was up and the sun just was gone behind the horizon.
Cleaned some bird droppings in the rocks.
MKIV
ISO 4000
300mm f/2.8 & 2x ext. III ( my fake 600mm )
f/5.6 1/800 HH ( thanks Steve for Grindelwald , Roesti will come soon ) from moving Zodiac.
Nearly full frame. I hate it when a image is so long when shot vertical. Here it did not suit at all. So cropped it with 8.5x11
C&C is always welcome, again sorry for a PB image!
Anette, I missed #1 so this is all new to me.
This is a very memorable shot. Composition works well. I find the overall image a bit dark, but with that lovely moon I guess you need to keep the rocks pretty dark.
About the rocks making them brighter. I had quite a bit trouble with the AF to lock on the PB. MY MKIV did a better job than the 1Dx in this case. It was very dark since there was no light source coming from me or behind me. Flash is forbidden with PBs.
My concern with lightening up the rocks the PB is on is, that it looks more like in daylight, but it wasn't actually. It was more twilight and in Andreas RP I do not see much any more of the late dawn. For me the rocks are not important, i am not showing them, for me was the PB and moon important to combine both that the moon is not blown out totally.
Should add as well, in this image I did not use a graduate filter at the bottom, but used one in #1! Go compare. WDYT?
I just paste the important text from #1 in here, that you might understand what I mean. Hope you understand :))
Text from #1:
We took turns to photograph this PB up there with the 5 zodiacs. Many have only horizontal images, I have both. Thanks to a little flea I took along this trip from Steve K. I certainly like the vertical better. I took 497 images of this PB, since light was gone from the sun, ""AF did not pick up the PB very often, my MKIV was at the end the better run with this one.""
But have a few images with a wider view, as well with the waterline to see how high he was up there!
Conditions to shot, rough sea, all in the boat moving a bit faster, since that kind of image is not out there very often. All trying hard and of course fast moves make a zodiac shake more. My flea told me, take your time and I did, but was hard to have a still hand when the "ground" is shaking than my body shakes too!!!. We spent about 1-2 hours just with him.
Have to add, I took 497 images, just because I wanted the moon to sit where I wanted. I have images the moon is just everywhere. The thing was, get the zodiac driver to drive where I want and hopefully no wave coming to drift us back!

Hi Anette - I like the moon better in this one (you knew I would say that, didn't you?). I prefer the rocks and feel of your op for the reasons you said. I prefer the comp of your first one. Here I feel like the moon is too centered and want to crop some from the lhs but then the PB winds up too centered so I am not sure if there is a solution. I love your vision here and planning.
Hi Anette, this would be a fabulous image without seeing your #1. For me the composition of your previous image provides a balance left and right and rock and sky. The moon is jut too center on this one and draw attention away from the PB. It is tough to post such a fabulous image because now that becomes the standard for people to view your image :). Loi
Hi Anette, the image is a very memorable one and i do like the fact the subject is small in frame and perhaps not the first thing you see.
To me the image has an illustrative look & feel, very smooth, with only a 2D rather than a 3D POV. Everything looks light, lit with the same light, no highlights or shadows???? Without seeking the original my first thought would be the rocks would all be in shadow, or at least the bottom half would be. I like the ratio split of elements. Having the moon as the dominate feature I would like to have seen that with more detail or clarity, however based on the techs, not possible, d so on this one you did remarkably well, Top Girl.
TFS

Post Production: It’s ALL about what you do with the tools and not, which brand of tool you use.
This is one of the loveliest bear images I have seen from you so far, and my guess is you will go back to it and try different things, just because one can do so much with it. I have just another example of cropping, not sure it works for you and not sure it works for me either, since I really like what you did with it in the first place. But since we all like to play (and it is fun to see what others have in mind), here's another option for a crop where I "moved" the Moon to the left...
…I just so wish I had a bear of my own
You know very well how I feel about this image, I think it is brilliant and it shows you have an eye for the beautiful, for the unusual, for that which touches our hearts. This lonely bear up there, sleeping under the Moon, such a peaceful scene, so quiet up there and so cold-these are my thoughts when I saw this the first time, and I really loved it Anette...
thanks so much for a all your comments and the time you took.
Rachel I did not know that you like this moon in here, as it is not sharp and I just cannot make it sharp Crop wise, I like what Gabriela did, will check if I have another file more as you all say for a crop.
Loi, I have quite a number of this image vertical & horizontal. I agree with the balance, absolutely. With all other images was "not quite perfect world" following me
It is tough to post such a fabulous image because now that becomes the standard for people to view your image :). Loi
Not quite sure what you mean with this. I have seen this PB in this conditions by now quite often by the "boat mates" on this trip. Everyone has a different take. I like mine in #1 best. On the other hand, I have been told by a friend, that his expectations are very high and there will be no mercy in this forum with the Svalbard images
I do not mind to post 2-3-4-5 images of this sleeping PB vertical or horizontal, this is for me a forum to learn and not a forum to showcase my images. For that I go to other places in the internet. I haven't posted the #1 in any other site. It sits in my portfolio in my website, that's it. At least there I have a bit more control when it gets stolen
Steve, for your comment your get more Roesti & Milka You said it in the way I meant to tell further up in my comment. Oh well you are master in English
That is exactly why I am not a fan of Andreas lighten RP, lots get lost, but Andreas had not much back story.
You are so right, should have sticked to the other PP, as it is very much asking for it. Thanks so much Steve.
I got now ideas I needed, will go back to #1 PP, which obviously works best for that. This OP,#2, was more based on the last time, #1 comments with brightening up more the blacks.
RP will be done soon, arc starts already to complain, must go first for a walk
Thank you very much everybody for your time and help
Hi Anette, understand your point about the lightning situation etc, i just played with it.
I think in many images , i make a statement in terms of flatness or tonal contrast not being strong enough. Most of of the images taken in dull or low light are naturally flat in tone and contrast…………But we overcome that by our PP, so not leaving the image natural, instead making the image pleasing to our eyes…..???!!
I still do find yours too dark.
I will remember and look what the others say……..
So keep up and happy processing, hoop hoop hooray.
I've never seen a polar bear image like this, quite extraordinary. I agree with Steve's comment that it looks very illustrative. I can't add any more to what has been given.

Andreas I do understand your point in all what you say.
In the B&W Giraffe image of Hilary, she said in one comment the word mood. This is what I wanted to bring in this one, which actually, I even opened up to much the rocks in the lower FG for me. I shouldn't have, just should have left it the way like the first image, #1 was.
Since this shows not only how it was, it shows more for me, myself
hi Anette
you are right about mood, and the things that come with the mood, and we all interpret mood differently , and that is good, i repeat my words from other threads , we would ending up with images looking all the same , and that is not good , quite boring.
So stick with your vision, i am happy with it and for you, most important that the author is happy with the end result, a bonus is , for me, if you make others happy , too.
PS, did you find out about the eye trick , i have published …………If not i give you a "private" lesson , if we ever meet in person, otherwise it is too complex , to explain, because my english is sooooooo baaaaad .
always love to read your comments. I open them already with a smile on my face, even arc sometimes lifts it's head when I giggle

I did not see your published eye trick, where on earth do I need to dig?
Your English so bad, gave me another good giggle I do know that you speak our mother tongue very well also that the snow did not even touch yet your area and maybe Gluehwein is not your thing
Hey Lady Milka,
who the heck is ARC? Is it your Bernadiner with a big drum attached around his neck, filled with RUM or SCHNAPS ?
Yep for sure ,Gluehwein nothing for me , i do only drink beer.
Check other thread, better check twice for LIETSCHIS EYE MAGIC, whoooooooo, i should try to develop a plugin for PS, for the dumb amongst us, ohhhhh, hope this was not under the belt line .Was not meant that way , just kidding.
Thanks a lot for the Keywords, will check for Lietsches Eye Magic will see what that will bring to me.
Don't forget, you just said you do a Plugin for us all in here, that we have it a bit easier. I expect it for a Christmas present or Easter egg
Now i have a giggle myself, i must say love your comments , too, never said that, so i do it now.
What a cutie…….. i had one myself , long time ago in the past , in a different life, but a blonde one , got him as puppie, but he passed away already ten years ago, and never got a new dog or other pets, too busy.
Present ? Ask Mr Detail about opening up his magic box, i think you know , what he thinks about sharing his deepest secrets , you have to go the hard way, with a little help from your friend.
I will keep that way, but evtl i will produce a CLOUD version for monthly, lets say 10 $ subscription, just as a discount , for some "SPECIAL" members, WDYT? Good idea?
Maybe there will be an egg, but not sure yet , what kind of……...
So now we are going really off topic, before others get bored.
Sometimes I find color just gets in the way of a really good image! the focus is the bear ! not the moon and sky they like the rocks shut be noticed afterwards… the color version of sky moon overpowers and detracts from the subject…
This is just my b&w version .. there are many other ways to convert …
Sorry I didn't get to read the other comments as I am just off to bed .. but I love this image and I CUD NOT HELP MYSELF.!!
Hi Anette - I think Peter has an interesting idea here and it definitely makes the PB the subject rather than the moon. I think you should have a play with converting it.
