Taken in Sabi Sands a month ago on a very dull overcast day

    Nikon D7100
    Nikon 70-300mm zoom lens @155mm
    1/400s
    f7.1
    ISO500

    hand held

RAW conversion in Nikon Capture. Adjusted WB, added 10% saturation
Photoshop Elements - cropped from top and left side. added sharpness - (I added 100, would appreciate thoughts on whether this is too much or too little)

    Hi Martin,
nice relaxed pose of this young chap with a really hard pillow, tough guy.
Comp is nice but sadly the head turn to the wrong side, otherwise we would see an image with a dreamy looking subject.
Like the colors overall, but would maybe go back in the reds a tad.Good detail , but looks a bit over sharpened in the fur and the grass. You have a funny sharpening curve going from left to right in the FG , i can almost the see brush stoke ? I think you should fade more the sharpening.

Hi Martin, this is a cute image...I too wish the head was angled a little more towards us. I too see the sharpening curve the Andreas mentions.

    Hi Martin,

your funny sharpening curve mentioned by Andreas jumped right away in my eyes. The contrast between sharpen and blurry is to big! Also agree with Andreas about a tad over sharpened. The rest Andreas gave you good suggestions. Couldn't you tell the driver to move around to see hm from the front and his hard pillow? Well, next time you know. Very nice pose of this guy, I feel my head hurting while using such pillow

    Have a great weekend

    Ciao

Hi Martin - I agree with the observations above. It's unfortunate that he is looking away. I also think it is too much sharpening and agree about the abrupt transition from sharpened to unsharpened. Looks like he has big paws and will hopefully grow into a regal king.

Thanks everyone for the assistance. I to see the curve you are referring to, I forgot to mention that I had a gaussian blur to the edge of the frame, but clearly applied too much. I WILL eventually get the hang of selective sharpening.

Hi Martin, I think this is one of your better images, not just for content, but not the PP is looking far better and avoiding at times heavy cropping.

Personally I might not have added any saturation, that perhaps may have given you a better rendition in colour, but totally agree that bringing the vehicle more to the left would have given a better angle and may have hidden the tip of the tail & the zebra (?) dung. Techs look good, but using a larger lens will give you a better shooting angle and you don't get the feeling of being right on top of the subject.

added sharpness - (I added 100, would appreciate thoughts on whether this is too much or too little)
Sadly I can't help Marin, no idea how elements works and the structure of the application, however in PS using USM you have three slider which you adjust, the first figure may vary, the next two are constant.

    Hi Martin

Knowing these little (big enough to make us run) sh.. stirrers very well, their inquisitive nature makes them want to investigate everything new and strange in their environment, especially campsites! Don't you have another image from the shoot where
    he is facing you?

Would suggest masked sat layer where you can selectively pull back saturation for reds on lion.

Try to use Blur tool on far BG at high% and reduce at get closer to subject. Sharpen only in same plane as eyes(focus point), depth depending on F-stop.

Artie's method: USM 228, 03, 1. Preview on Web, if to crunchy, pull back.

    Hope it helps..

    Get CS6!!!!!

Hi Martin, I quite like the pose here, shows what lions do best - sleep - and against anything. I feel the colour of the coat is a touch too much, over sharpening mentioned, but the overall comp works well.

Ive only been to Sabi once, back in 2008, great place to be where ever you stay.

Nice one Martin - agree with Steve, one of your better posts (bar the reds which are overcooked IMHO )
In Elements, use these settings for web sharpening: 125%, 0.2px - once or twice on subject should be sufficient.
