Very nice image.
You have great light on the wings and good IQ.
You will love the 1DX!

Is it my eyesight or is the birds eye a bit soft?
Interesting to hear that you bought the 1DX after CPS lent you one. They are going to lend me one next week.
What did you upgrade from? I'm very happy with my 5D3

I upgraded from a 7D. fwiw, I exposed this shot based on my 7D experience. As I'm using the camera more, I'm thinking that I can (should?) go with a higher ISO in favor of a faster shutter for BIFs. I'd like to hear others thoughts on that.
Don't feel qualified to compare the 1DX to the 5d3.

You can go as high as 3200 with the 1DX without breaking a sweat! When I had my 7D my preferred ISO was 400 and I would go to 1000 reluctantly. Now, with my !DX I shoot mostly at 800 a but don't even worry when I am up to 1600. Take a look at Doug Brown's crane at ISO 3200!!

Thank you for catching that! I did some selective brushwork on the eye and somehow the "Sharpness" dialed all the way down. Easily corrected.

Nice work with this one, Jerry.
I love the way the under-wings are revealed in such detail.
While the sunlight was excellent, to my eye, the whole image would look richer if it was just very slightly less bright.
Not that there's anything at all with the way you presented it, but I tend to favor images that are modestly understated when very bright light is dominant.

Bill, Are you suggesting anything more complicated than adjusting the exposure by a 1/2 stop or so?

Not at all, though that would have worked in the field. Perhaps even a full stop via 'F' or exposure compensation. The sun was so bright that I doubt the excellent under-wing detail would be compromised.
I was actually suggesting trying slightly less Brightness in post production to see how it looked.

Whoops! I should have been more explicit. Meant to say, "...anything more complicated than adjusting the exposure slider in LR by a 1/2 stop or so?" My mistake.

nice exposure and details.
The 1DX is the best camera for birding IMO and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. huge upgrade :)
def use higher ISO and fast SS for flight.

A beautiful shot! I'd love to see you re-post after sharpening the eye. Thanks too for your comments on the 1DX. Makes me think seriously about trading in my 1D MkIV.

1) Removed the negative sharpening on the eye (don't know how that managed to creep in the original processing).
2) Slid the LR exposure slider left by 0.3 (0.5 seemed too much to my eyes).

Excellent, Jerry ! It takes the edge off and retains the power of the original.
