Default Black and White bonanza - Impala

Following on from all these black and whites, I thought I'd add my own. This taken on a very overcast day. The light was dreadful so I said to my guests "let's try some motion panning shots as the conditions are ideal". No sooner I said that, a windstorm whipped up and animals started running around the place as they do when they get nervous from the high winds. This impala, and 4 others ran across an open dambo, and passed by us at a perfect distance....we couldn't ask for more. I had quite a few to choose from in different poses, but like this one best I think.

Simple conversion - this is nearly FF (just lost a bit when slight straightening) and normal PP.

    1D4, 500mm f4 @ f5.6, 1/200s, ISO 1600 - set on TV @1/200s for assessed optimal blur.

    Any comments welcome please....

Hi Ed - the techs look spot on with excellent sharpness in the head but nice motion. Interesting that it looks like there are 4 hooves in the back. I feel the image is a bit flat though and would look at bringing in the right hand slider in levels to about 240 or so to give it a lift.

This is brilliant, Edward! Love the blur, the illusion created by movement. The head and horn stand out beautifully against that BG, love it, congratulations!

Ed, this is working nice with the right amount of blur and sharpness.
I would go even further than Rachel suggested in Levels, but masking out the real highlights.
Like the overall tonality in general , but i would try to get a bit more depth in the darker MT in the subject itself.

    HI Ed,

great motion image. For me the image is a tad flat or maybe a bit more. I had it in PS, tried a few tweaks I love to use in B&W. Easiest to see. Open adjustment layer levels, as Rachel said with the RHS slider according Rachel, there I would go further, the middle slider to your liking to the right than adjust the LHS slider to your liking, or grab selective color black and neutral! That brings this image to another place

    Have a great eve

    Ciao

Hi Ed, interesting to read the thoughts AFTER seeing and working on the image as you can be on similar pages or way off. Personally I think it's the ares from white to the mid tone you need to look at. The blacks are solid, i.e. the eye the hooves, nothing you do about that, but I think you can do something to bring more of a 'tonal' range back into the image.

I like the extended legs at both ends as it typifies the subject very nicely, however I would like a little more to the LHS & below, but just personal taste. Albeit very subtle and I mean very subtle, just slightly 'lifting' the BKG a bit helps I feel to separate the subject more so it's less likely to blend in with the surroundings? again this is all subjective and will vary in terms of what we all see.

Not sure if this helps or not, but I really like the thinking here. It might be easier to view both side by side in PS under arrangements for comparison?

Yes - I completely see what you are all getting at. It certainly needs a lift as you all suggest and and as Steve has shown. I will rework a new version based on all your comments. Thanks so much for taking the time to make suggestions.

You are welcome Ed, however, again it's just one person's take and what I see may not always correspond to what you see, even side by side on a monitor.

    All the best.

Hi Ed, good detail and sharpness on the head, and thats what counts with these type of images. Your conversion works well, and I do like Steve's repost.
