I'm by no means a 'pure' bird photographer, and I often find myself trying to compose the subject with the elements before me, that is when the bird is not in-flight! Anyhow, would be curious to hear what others think of this one.

    good exposire, colors and pose.
I would prefer to crop from the "V" shape to the left, cloning out the branch behind and from the left to the bird.

Hi John, good to see you here and be sure to visit the wildlife forum.. I like the mood of this image. Comp is fine. Biggest distraction for me is the branch on the top right that come in out of nowhere. Easily cloned out. Maybe a bit more on the right side would help as well.

I like this image a lot. Lovely kestrel, very different from the European kestrels. Composition is good, but I would be tempted clone out the branch in the upper right corner.

    Beautiful image, John!
I like this a lot, this tree makes a wonderful perch and the Kestrels placment in the frame
    works well.
The cloning suggestions others have made will only strengthen the composition IMO!
Both the branch coming out of the lower shoulder and the one in the top right
coming out of knowhere should be easy to clone out if desired.

    Hi John,

Excellent mood here and good placement of the bird in the frame.
Just wish for a bit more room to the right to let the tree breathe.

    Welcome to BPN!!!

Hi John I hope you don't mind, but I modified your image. The first thing I noticed when opening it in Photoshop was it was Adobe Colour Profile. For the web, Adobe RGB will show "flat" colours. I converted it to RGB, used a free Action called Paint with Light to lighten the bird itself. I cloned out the stick in the top right. I cloned out the stick also that was "growing" out of his back.

I did like the subject and composition on this! :)

Thanks to all for the great feedback. Jody - I don't mind at all the modification... if anything, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to do so. I like your cloning mods, and agree with the improved look. In terms of colorspace, I recently upgraded to CS3, and haven't moved all my actions over... one which resizes for the web and converts to sRGB. Guess I forgot to convert on this one before posting!

    Thanks again everyone.

    John
