Image taken at 10:am at Melkvlei in the Kalahari. Note the expression on the male's face as the female gets away from him, not interested in his advances Male is at the back, with thicker and bigger horns (of course)

Great image - love the symmetry. Do you have a bit more space on the sides? I'd like a little more behind the boks..... Otherwise perfect to my eyes.

Thank you Edward and Carl, glad you like the bokkies! Ed, unfortunately not a sliver behind them, I was trying very hard to shoot in such a ay that I had enough in front of them…I cropped a little from the bottom though.

    Have a great Sunday,

    Kind regards

I love the way you've captured the intensity of the physical exertion shown by both antelopes. The kick of dust from the female and the detail you've retained is wonderful and I love the soft background. Really excellent work.

    Hi Gabriela ,
great action shot with nice timing to get them almost perfectly in the frame, think in the heat of the moment it is very difficult to watch all at the same time, so congrats on your work, from capture to output.

I do think it is tad light for me , so i took the liberty to push it a bit in the darker direction, WDYT?

This is masterfully done Gabriela! Great symmetry and timing and exposure in what can only be described as harsh late-morning light (knowing the Kgalagadi light so well). This doesn't look harsh in my books.

Many thanks for your comments, dear friends!
And special thanks to Andreas who took the time to do the RP-I really appreciate it! Andreas, there are three versions of this image on my hard drive-the one I posted and another two, one lighter version and one darker, similar to yours. I had this dilemma whether to present things the way they were or to enhance them a little. I decided to go in-between. I obviously like to please the audience when I post an image, at the same time I take great pleasure when a fellow photographer like Morkel -who has been to the Kalahari - knows what the place is like, what the light is like, and appreciates my effort to portray things "the way they are". In the Kalahari one goes out early morning (around 6:30 am in October and 06:00 in February) and the light is sweet for about two hours, after that it becomes harsh and as the temperature rises, there is also a heat haze that makes sharp images impossible, one has to be close to one's subject to get a reasonably sharp image. Then again afternoons around 16:00 that sweet soft light is there till about 18:30, but we drive the whole day to find out where our subjects are, anticipating their moves and following spoor/tracks in the sand, so we may capture some decent images later on. I think I know why this appeals to Morkel-that white light, the heat, springbok herds walking towards or from water, the harsh environment, the heat haze in the distance, waiting for hours at a waterhole hoping for a sighting, an opportunity…This is what the Kalahari is all about, and why we keep going back year after year.

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Thank you Rudi! Whew, it is hot in January in the KTP, but not so many people...We are going in February, just as hot! Can't wait to see the images you will bring back...
