    Default Leopard Cub

It has been a while since I posted a leopard shot . This is another one of the cooperative 8 month old male cub photographed in the Timbavati Game Reserve, South Africa in August 2012. I decided to continue my experimentation with some b&w and converted this one in Nik Silver Efex.

    Canon 7D
    100-400 @ 130mm
    1/160
    f5.6
ISO 400 (I should have gone higher for more ss, no idea why I did not at the time).
    EC +.33
HH from safari vehicle, ff, levels, curves, selective dodging and burning, sharpened in CS6.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

Hi Rachel - not sure why no comments - I enjoy the conversion and the really good detail you have here. The comp is great. I am guessing that the other leg/paw was not worth including otherwise that might have added a bit to the already great image. You might to look at the right side of his face and leg as we looking at the image - masking as well as the other leg amongst the leaves

Nice image - great that he seems preoccupied with whatever he's doing and isn't looking at you with ears back! Masking issue as Carl mentioned and perhaps a little darkening of the face - looks a little like you used flash which you obviously didn't but for a backlit subject the face looks unnaturally bright to me.

    Hi Rachel,

the conversion I like very much, reminds me of something
The comp looks good to me as well. I am sure the masking mistakes you only did that we find something to comment on.
Otherwise that is just not you, I remember 63% - 37%

Details are fantastic as well sharpness. Edward mentioned it already with the face a bit to bright.

    Have a great weekend

    Ciao

Thanks Carl, Ed and Anette. Masking error and perhaps a tad oversharpened comes from trying to quickly process and post before heading to work. I broke Steve's rule of process then wait a day or 2 to post. I'll look at the brightness of the face as well.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel, difficult to tell on the laptop & parking the already covered issues, I initially wondered if it was just too contrasty between the blacks & whites, therefore I did apply some midtone to the subject avoiding things like the ears & eyes, not sure it has helped? The white top left seems to be balanced with the bottom RHC, but I do think you could loose some of the space to the right. In doing so I'm less inclined to think about the missing front left paw.

A very appealing portrait of the cub. Would have preferred the other front paw to be included, but despite that, really nice image.

Awesome image Rachel! 130mm with 100-400 must have been real close to the subject. Great detail and sharpness. Love those eyes. The sharpness you got with the 1/160 SS and f/5.6 is remarkable.

Thanks Sanjeev, much appreciated. Sanjeev - this must have been the game drive I had the vehicle to myself so no one else to move around and create shake.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel
