    Image captured at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo last weekend at Tamron Workshop. Used fill flash on the advice of James Shadle, our instructor.

    Nikon D200 with 80-200mm f2.8 lens with 2X teleconverter at 210mm
    SB-600 flash on camera set for fill
    ISO 400
    1/125 s at f8

    Well you have his attention. Nice detail and I think you did well given that it was probably difficult photographing where you were. I think that you could have used a little more fill flash but you certainly have the right idea.

    I don't know if it was possible at the time, but sliding a bit to camera right, would have moved the tail out of the bright spot and gotten you a better relationship of head angle to focal plane.

    I think a little work in PS could brighten this up a bit, and any more flash at moment of capture may have put the bright spot on the beak over the top (it's close already).
