    Default Barren Hwange

Taken in Hwange back in 2007 during the middle of a drought, when a dust bowl blew up around a waterhole.

    5D + 500mm (plus 1.4)
    ISO 100
    1/400 @ f/9

Only revisited this week, as historically, found my PP skills were not up to converting :)

I LOVE this. Wonderful shot, from the dust to the composition to the expression on her face. We make the same face in those conditions. Only thing, I would warm it up a little so that there's some richness to her coat and some more emphasis on the dust.

Hi Russell - I like the comp, the dust and the layers here. The lioness herself feels a bit thin so I would give her a slight midtone boost.

This is a dramatic image. At first glance I thought the whiteness was snow (hey, I live in snow country!). Adding some warmth would make this more dust-like for me. Great pose with the lioness looking at you. I would consider removing some of the vague rocks behind her just to further emphasize the bleakness of the conditions and also stop the eye from roaming above the lioness.

Great moody shot Russell. A bit more warmth on the lioness would be nice.
This may look good in B+W too.

Hi Russell, don't forget you can go 1200px wide, 900px high now.

I like the atmospheric look to the image, although I think the 5D didn't quite come up trumps with the IQ? The almost white, 'ghostly' environment is a nice departure from what we see, great to see another habitat.

Hope you are now catching up with sleep these days, good to see you back & posting.

Took 5 minutes to make a few masking and WB adjustments as per the suggestions.

I'm actually more busy than...so this was a quick dip until Jan.

The IQ is ok, the issue when I come to sharpen is all noise/dust over the lioness. Have tried increasing the threshold to avoid sharpning it via USM.

That's better Russell, the old eyes can appreciate it more, the look & feel has a hint of 'Mr Delaney' about it.

    Hi Russell,

the RP does it for me. The image is asking for turned into a B&W, IMHO!
I like the pose and comp of the lioness, very nice.

    have a great weekend

    Ciao

The repost is much nicer on the eye. Like the drama you've shown and of course the expression.

Love the feel here Russel! Great repost too...I just feel you could perhaps crop a wee bit from the bottom and remove the OOF bits of elephant dung? Not a problem with them per se...just trying to clean up overall image?
Hwange will see me soon - that's if they don't kill everything with cyanide first
