    Default A normal Oryx

    Attached Images Attached Images

Oryx at a waterhole having an eye on the elephant. The elephants have been spraying the little ones with water to chase them away. In two words: Big Bullies

LR 5 normal treatment, PS Levels & curves a round Mid-tones, sharpening in CS6.

Cropped to 8.5x11 Somehow there was to much above for me.

    MK IV
    300mmf/2.8 & 1.4 II ( at that time, now own the 1.4 III )
ISO 320 f/5.0 1/5000 set to this, as I wanted to get the water spray from the elephants Could have gone down to f/6.3 when I see that now. Will keep it in mind!

    Great perspective Anette,
    Colours look very natural.
Shame about the Oryx in the background with its head chopped off. I might be tempted to crop from the RH side to get rid of that, coming in as far as the elephant's leg.

Interesting perspective and great detail, but just not my cup of tea. Thanks for posting though.

    Dearest Anette,

I too like the perspective here, and also the colours-Martin is right, they look very natural. If there was no elephant and no zebra in the picture I would have thought this was taken in the Kalahari!

Anette, I hesitated to comment on this image when I saw it the first time and gave myself time to think about it-was not sure about the oryx/gemsbok on the right. Been wondering what I would do if this was mine.Thought about Martin's suggestion of crop but eventually decided I like it best the way it is. I believe the image would lose context if one removed too much-the ellie's leg would not look like an ellie leg anymore, and the oryx in the BG would be just a shape.

Interesting image and thought provoking, Anette!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Anette - I also looked a couple of times before commenting. You said you cropped this but I'm guessing you don't have any room to the right. I do wish you had the whole head of the second oryx and don't think you can really crop to compensate for it. So while I like the idea, this one doesn't work for me without the whole head. I know its heat haze but I might also apply a bit more NR to the zebras in the bg.

    Rachel

    Hi Anette

I love your work and applaud the way you think OOB ,

But I have to disagree with everyone , the image does not work for me on a couple of levels. The viewer's eye battles to focus on the subject. As the Elephants leg is not OOF enough so your eye goes straight to leg then to drinking Gemsbok and then is pulled to the cropped Gemsbok and then to the OOF zebra. So know where for the eye to settle.

I know Nebrownie waterhole very well and it is very challenging with the steep angle and harsh light as well as competing with other people for space.

    sorry … just being honest..

Thank you very much everybody for your honest comments, that's what I want

There is no room to the RHS Rachel, I only cropped from top.
I will see what I can do with this one. The Gemsbok on the RHS is just in the way, have seen it, but did not wanted to remove it.
A crop to isolate the drinking animal from all will loose to much IQ.

Again thanks to all of you for your honest comments

Have a great day and weekend

    Ciao
    Anette

Hi Anette, overall there is a lot to take in and like Peter, my eyes keep wandering, therefore would a more 'vertical' crop work? Where the RH vertical runs through the elephants leg, retain as much of this as possible. It may then bring the eyes more to the drinking Oryx???

    Hi Steve,

I can give it a shot, as the images is done, why not. Have another one vertical with 2 of the Oryx, that works better.
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment

Have a great eve and upcoming weekend

    Ciao

    Hi Anette,
i like what you are trying to achieve with this image, at least i think so.
Like the colors ,tones and the fact that you have more than one animal in that frame and all at different depth inside the image.
But as others said the big issue is the crop, that you have chosen, the Oryx on RHS did add much to the image, is even making it less attractive, for me.

So i cropped the way i would try to get the most out of it.

    Hi Andreas,

thanks so much for your time and I think good crop. I like i that way
The others maybe not, but at the end I have to like it
The ele leg I might can "turn" down a bit the sharpness. Will give it a shot.
    Thanks so much

have a great eve and a great Sunday

    Ciao
    Anette
