    Default Three Striped Field Mouse

I did something quite risky the other night - went to my earliest folder (Kalahari 2009) to see if there was anything worthwhile processing. Sadly I had to delete image after image and kept only a few for reference purposes. Most photographs were taken at the same aperture ( never changed my settings for the first few days). ISO was still something new to me and I was not sure how it affected my images, often I forgot it existed.

So I found this one image (and another few) I would really like to share.

Equipment used for this image and settings:

    Camera: Nikon D90
    Lens: Nikon F2.8 70-200 (90mm)
    ISO 400
    F6.3
    1/640s

Isn't he the cutest mouse ever? They are fast, this little guy just put on the brakes for a second here when I took this shot

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Gabriella, glad you raided the 'early folders', this is lovely and a refreshing break.

I really like the overall hues & colour tones of the image and even if it's at your early stages of photography, it seems you have just the right amount of DOF, with focus where it needs to be, WD. Nice to see you kept the tail in, often this is clipped or forgotten about. I quite like it as presented, but I also wonder if you could loose some space off the top, so the crop follows the posture of the subject?

Great to see both you and Carl have added another species into the mix.

Keith, perhaps you need to name the location so we can avoid it in the future.

    Dear Friends,

Here's a new crop as per your suggestions-thank you, it works for me!

…Just noticed while I was doing some sharpening before posting: there's a nice reflection of a big tree in the Mousie's eye.

This image was taken at Polentswa in the Kalahari, and the tree reflected in the eye of the mouse has a wonderful little creature living in it, similar to the Tree Striped Mouse-it is a Tree Rat, a beautiful little golden mouse-like creature who makes a massive nest from tree branches and leaves. Few people know about them and one can only see them mostly at night, as they hardly ever leave the tree. I was so fortunate to discover a nest with babies two years ago, unfortunately no light whatsoever and therefore no decent images. Did not dare shine a torch on the little ones, they are so delicate and so easily stressed.

Keith, I am not sure we are talking about the same mouse-the Tree Striped is supposed to be endemic to the Northern Cape region; where is the coffee place you think you saw them? These guys I know feed on flowers, pods and seeds, no amount of cheese or bread tempts them (I tried). In the Kalahari they live in little holes under bushes and at times (late afternoon or early morning) they can be spotted at the top of the bush feeding on tiny flowers.

Thank you all for lovely comments, much appreciated!

Hi Gabriella, no need for a RP, but perhaps a tad more space on the LHS, not much and very easy to add, works for me.

Lovely soft light, pleasing colours and good IQ/DOF here Gabriela! I cringe to open my old folders so well done on that
I wish there was a hint more space behind the tail but yeah, not a biggy.

Hi Gabriela - very nice image of an often overlooked species. Good job on including the whole tail. Nice detail and tones. Repost works for me.

No need to apologise Keith, mice are fast, it was only a case of mistaken identity

Thanks everyone, and Morkel-do look through these old folders, you might discover some gems

    Hi Gabriela,
good to see some other , mostly overseen stuff, there was for sure nothing more exciting around???!!!

Like the image as presented with the soft light and muted colors, with good choice of the techs.

But i would try to give a bit more depth and form into the fur.

Thank you all for your comments,

Just wanted to say I have so many images of lion and cheetah and antelope I have not yet processed. Yet I see these every day on BPN. For this reason I like to post something different from time to time, something you have not seen yet. I am passionate about wildlife and no matter how small the creature, it interests me. I take images of everything I see, that includes beetles, ants, spiders, and yes-mice. Most people oversee the little things in nature, and some of these tiny creatures are just as exciting and entertaining to watch as is the big lion or leopard or elephant. Photographing them requires a bit of skill and some knowledge of their behaviour, just like with other mammals. You'll have to put up with my rodent images from time to time, otherwise I will start a "mousephotographers.com" website

Wishing you all a wonderful week-end,
    Gabriela Plesea
