Not my best polar bear shot but a fun one. This may be what the PB thought of all the long lenses. A much bigger crop than I would normally do. This is probably only about 40% of the original image.

    Canon 5D3
    300 II plus 2x III
    1/2000
    f5.6
    ISO1600
Monopod from moving boat, cropped, levels, curves, selective burning, sharpened in CS6.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

    Nice fun shot Rachel.
Given that the polar bear sticking his tongue out is the reason for posting this image why not crop a little bit tighter and lose a bit of the ice?
I know that you've already cropped a lot but in for a penny in for a pound (cent/dollar)

    Hi Rachel,
where has he left his bass guitar? Seems to be on holiday ? And Gene on his own without any girls , think he his now in his older days..

Quite like the image design with the placement of the bear in the frame and the ice blocks to his left.Great colors in the ice in the center, but ask why the ice in the FG (which i would lose)and BKG looks that dirty.Maybe it was that greyish.?
The blacks on the bear are looking a bit choked and not sure about the yellow of the bear, maybe a tad too strong, specially in the darker parts. But colors are subjective , so up to you to correct me if i am wrong.
Eventually you could give the ice around the bear a bit crack.

I like the crop and composition of the OP better as I like more inclusion of the habitat. That is an old bear (ears look so far apart as their skull grows for life), love the scarred face and the tongue add some comedy. So much character. TFS as usual Rachel.

Very nice image Rachel, totally fun! I like the environs and the habitat included in the OP. Martins RP lays more emphasis on the subject though. Nicely done. TFS.

Thanks Martin, Andreas, Stan and Sanjeev. Martin - the crop does place more emphasis but I sort of like the layer of blue water at the bottom too.

Andreas - you're right about the whites looking a little too grey. A little too much in curves probably.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

All nits aside, a lovely moment well captured, love the "ice tongue" symmetry going on here!

    Hi Rachel,

had a giggle with all long lenses
love the comp with all ice and water you have included in this image - your crop
The white in the BG is already mentioned, I thought it was the light during the night or so!
The yellowish of the PB. Have been told that comes from all the seal/whale blubber, the oil in it, they eat ( blubber, not sure if that is correct written! )
The white ones feed on a bit different diet, those can be found more on the islands like I did. The yellow ones have been in the pack ice, lots of seals around, the white ones we found on the islands! That's what I have learned, not sure if true… the gods will know

Funny though, that tongue is not all way through purple, has also red spots between. I only have all purple through tongues, no red between

    Have a great eve

    Ciao
    Anette

Hi Rachel, although an interesting moment captured, I do find the large crop hurting the IQ, therefore have you thought about having the subject smaller within frame which can also be just as striking, although with this particular 'action', I guess you need to be tighter in. I much prefer the OP, as it conveys the environment, especially retaining the water, going tighter will also amplify the loss of IQ too.

Anette, I've only seen black tongues.

Thanks Marc, Anette and Steve. I appreciate the comments and all the info. I chose this comp to show off the ice, water color and of course, the tongue. I can go wider but thought the effect of the tongue out gets a little lost. Anette - I didn't know that the diet influenced the fur color. Very interesting.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Cool pose and I prefer the OP comp, Rachel. Agree on the whites being affected too much after the fact - an easy fix for you.
I hear you on why you cropped this much - but it stands to reason that at high res (or on a large print) it wouldn't "get lost"?

Like the OP as well. The behaviour is still completely evident in the larger OP. Very cool image!

Thanks Morkel and Ed, much appreciated. Morkel - you're probably right about a large print and a looser comp.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel
