He was slender, red as fire, fast as lightning, and he stopped for only a fraction of a second to check his surroundings before he disappeared behind a tree. I guess I must have been faster than him, I guess I did not change my settings on the camera and shot with whatever settings I had, and I guess I would have had a better image if he wasn't backlit. Well, it's all speculation really, because I do not really remember much, other than seeing this little ball of fire and aiming at him and then taking a few frames, most of them overexposed. Nikon D3S, Nikon 500 F4, ISO 800, F5.6, 1/1250s. Most probably spot metering. Hope you like him, although you might not like the image as such. Comments and critique welcome, as always.
Hi Gabriela -I've never seen one with this coloring. I like the pink nose and nice details in the fur. I do wish it was angled toward you just slightly.
Hi Gabriella, I think you did well considering it was backlit. I like the side on, inquisitive posture, typified by the front paws drawn into the chest , however it's a little 2D I feel and needs a bit more light to add more depth to create shadows, lights & darks. Nice clean BKG helping to isolate the subject. Like the contrast of the muted BKG against the 'fire red' of the subject.

what a fire red one chap. Never seen that kind in this color before either! I have to tune in with the slight turn of the head somehow. No idea why just feels than better to me, I guess!
Details and sharpness are great, agree full what has been said above.
Hi Gabriela,
nice one of this species.HA could be a bit better in an ideal world, like the coat colors, but miss a 3D feeling in the tones.I do find it a bit light overall, not much though.
Like the sharpness and detail.
Hello everyone! Thank you so much for your input, tried some more changes but not sure if there is any improvement…The matte patch on top of the Mongoose's head was there, by the way (not a processing error). I have a few other images of him but they are heavily overexposed. I have seen quite a few of these chaps in the Kalahari, all red as fire and with a temperament to match. Called them "Red Mongoose" at first, only to find out that there are quite a few colour varieties of the same species, the majority are yellowish and not as exciting to photograph as these red little guys, since they blend too well with the environment.
