Lovely expression on his face, obviously thinking about something. I like the separation from the background of both the lion and the grasses and I think you've selected a nice soft tone for the conversion.

Great image Morkel, like the comp and pose, work very well with the wind swept mane and the great expression on his face, Shaddows nicely handled on the lion, with nice detail extracted. The conversion work well too, i may just look at possible darkening the vegetation on either side of him as they look a little overdone from a shadow recovery side.

Love the expression here on his majesty here Morkel, with the wind blown mane and the disdain look, would prefer just a smidge more lower room, but no big deal.

The expression of the lion is awesome. It really makes this image. I like the comp, conversion and details.

Hi Morkel - nice pose, expression and toning. The comp works for me too. Brendon's suggestion is a good one to pursue.

Hi Morkel, what was the rational/thinking for going B/W oppose to the colour route?

Personally I do feel you need a bit more extra below, it's a tad too close to the foot of the trim, similar to an elephant an another image from Mana I think. If you have the image area I would explore moving the whole crop down and going even more pano perhaps? I like the idea of placing the subject to the left as the space to the RHS works. I agree that a bit more tone to the FG would also help, going the Peter D way with an almost bleach grassland? You have the definition in the face, but perhaps a tad more sharpening in the highlights?

    Hi Morkel,

the conversion works very well with me with this one. Brendon said some good suggestions with this one. Love the wind sweeping his mane
Agree with the FG toning down a tad.

    Have a great eve

    Very dramatic shot Morkel.
Love the textures and detail of the lion.
The background is very bright, but I think that works well here, however I would like a darker foreground, a similar level to the lion and the strip of ground he is lying on.

Thanks a lot for the kind comments, folks.
    Peter, glad you like it
Steve - just worked better for me because of the exposure variance - here's the colour version for comparison. I do have space at the bottom but I cropped to have the lion's FACE on the ROT strong point as opposed to the "horizon line" on the ROT bottom guideline.

Morkel, my vote for b&w, and the framing + expressions work great. I have a similar version of a Lion from Etosha in b&w, only that he's far away into the pan, with extensive views of his lair.
My only thought is regarding the graininess in the lower (darker) portions of the mane....I think leaving some shadow in it would make it alright.

Nice image and discussion. I prefer the B&W but I'd like to see a little more sharpening on the big boy to make him stand out a bit. A little more below - another vote for that.
