    Default Horned Grebe Juxtaposition.

For some, juxtaposition is an acquired taste and for others, high key is...so combining the two may or may not work for all, but will for some (I hope!). Love the subjectivness of art!

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/800s., f/5.6, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, small crop for comp (but still about 80% FF), the oof bird's eye was lost in the dark area so I dodged and sponged it into existence. Audio used to lure the subjects closer.

    Hi Daniel,
I have looked at this a couple of times.
I just love the color palette and the color tones. The grey, silver, white with the dramatic pop of red eye with what almost appears to be a red tear coming from the eye is wonderful.
    Low POV and IQ excellent.
I don't like the OOF grebe. Just one opinion though...

I did not think I would like this from the thumbnail, but it is very artful and attractive.
I think the OOF bird is in the perfect place and the perfect pose to make it work.

Daniel can't say a lot about the technical bit but from an artistic point of view I think it ticks all the boxes love the colour and the tones and the OOf bird really adds to the image IMHO,just great for me.

This is indeed a work of art, from my subjective viewpoint. I could imagine a beautiful image without the oof grebe, but it works very nicely with it as well. No nits.

I really like how the heads and bills of both birds are pointing, pretty much, in the same direction. Lovely, artistic image.

    Daniel,

The eye really pops in this otherwise monochromatic image. You nailed the composition here, and did a very nice job on the oof eye.

I'm wondering if burning in the black feathers just a tad might give it a bit more "pop". Just a thought that occurred to me.

I still haven't looked up the meaning of the word; juxtaposition. I like high key images for sure and this is one of them.
Interestingly my eyes drawn to the OOF bird first and then to the one in focus. Love the in focus bird, Daniel.

Hi Dan, oh yes, the 'tone' to the overall image is top class. Your usual low angle of capture has turned out well, and I do like the bow wave. The red eye puts this over the top.

    Dan:

I tend to not be the biggest fan of high key images, but it works very well for this bird and image. Juxtapositions are always a challenge, but the balance of the two birds is excellent with mirrored poses, and the rear bird is OOF enough to not compete too much with the front bird.

    Good shooting angle, techs.

    Well done.

    Cheers

The more I look at it, the more I like it Daniel. I really like what you did with the OOF bird and how it matches the subject. I would like to see this one printed. try a 9:16 crop with more space on both sides if you have it. TFS
