    Default Jaguar

Photographed in the Pantanal in Brazil, Oct. Had lots of good sightings for the eye but tough for the camera. Most of my images are in bright dappled light but this image is one of the few in even light. This female was prowling along the river edge and I was trying to move the camera at her speed & staying focused on the eye. Photographed from a small boat.

    C & C most appreciated.

Hi Nancy, great sighting and capture. Looks like she may be pregnant. Good details and sharpness, love the patterns and the eye. I find my eye drawn to the highlights on her neck, may want to tone that down a little and brighten up her face and eye. Loi

Awesome cat Nancy. From the wet coat in parts it looks like she was either swimming or lying in the water before hand. Looks in top condition too. I like how you have encompassed its natural habitat and the detail is good. IMO I am not sure if the colours are quite there far as her coat is concerned but then I was not there. The whites seem a little highlighted/ Well captured Nancy

What a lovely healthy looking Jaguar! Wouldn't know if it was pregnant or well fed, but either way it's looking good! I wonder if you could get more detail out of the blacks perhaps, as they look a little dark to me..... however, I haven't seen a Jaguar and perhaps more familiar with Leopard which are undoubtedly different. Love the way she's walking along the steep river bank and you can tell she's completely at home in that environment.

Hi Nancy - Certainly looks like you had good sightings. It's never easy shooting from a moving boat but it has given you a nice low pov. I like the walking pose along the riverbank. I agree about toning down the highlights slightly and that the blacks on the jaguar are choked a little. There's also some blue and cyan creeping in particularly in the legs. Btw did you ever rework the previous jaguar image?

Thank you everyone for such good advice. Here is a repost where I tried to address all the mentioned issues.

Rachel, I did rework the previous jaguar image and I thank you for your precise suggestions. I have read them many times. I have to develop my eye for subtle colors within the image and to know just what needs to be adjusted and what to add or subtract.

Hi Nancy, the RP is better, but I do feel the coat is so smooth, with little, if any definition. This perhaps is due to her being in the water, but it has an almost 'porcelain' look. Fantastic sighting, well worth the trip and no doubt some remarkable memories.

    Hi Nancy,
well done with your sightings of this elusive cat, not many of us have seen one in the wild, i guess.Think you have enjoyed it a lot.
I do like the wet walking Jaguar on the river bank.
I agree with Steve`s observation about RP and the look of cat, so would be very interesting to see the original if the cat has that por………. look., never heard that word before( i am German as you know ) but i understand what he means.

What a brilliant sighting, I don't often see wild jaguar photos so well done. Not much to add to the critiques so far.

Lovely sighting and I quite like the setting.
Good suggestions made alread, the RP is an improvement, Nancy. I would be tempted to play with this in monochrome too...
Wish to do a Pantanal trip in the near future!

Thank you all for your assistance and comments! I have looked at many of my other jaguar images and I believe this one looks so smooth (porcelain) because she is totally wet. You can just see some water dripping from her belly.

Take it from a guy that shoots probably 1000 images a year of wet bears, it's just tough to get them looking like anything else. I still am uncomfortable every time I sharpen them.

Nice shot, and the repost works better for me. Sure the glaze from water makes it tough to deal with, but not a deal breaker for me!
