    Default Ungainly Runner

This lone giraffe was running past a herd of elephants at a remote waterhole in Etosha late one afternoon. In about 2.5 weeks I will be heading back there with my family - can't wait!
I love using other animals in the background to add context to a scene, like here.

Nice action, the dust kick up is cool and the elephants really add to the image.
I think some off the top would look good as would more in front if you have it.

Nice action here Morkel, with the subsequent dust and tail flick, I'm gathering you don't have any more room on right?

Thanks guys. I have space on the RHS - but had to crop out a "water pump" that was standing there .
I felt it works this way because of the herds "behind" the giraffe that mean more to the scene than having more space to "run into"...

Hi Morkel - My first thought was also that I wish there was more room on the rhs even though it appears you strategically captured it with the two groupings of elephants framing the giraffe. Either that or it feels like you were a second or two late and the giraffe is already by you. Dof, dusty Etosha feel and low pov are all great as usual. I just still would like to see it with more room to the rhs. If it were mine I would take the reds down just slightly. It gives a little more form to the dust.

I like that he's running out of the image with the herds remaining in the bg.

I like the thought of capturing the scene with other animals, than the pump
Post Etosha, I've grown fond of using bigger aperture shots to include just a hint (or almost only shapes) of other species, and would've loved to see the same here too!

Morkel, I kind of like the comp as it gives a sense of movement between the giraffe being on the move and the elephants chilling out in the background. If find there is a subtle yet noticeable contrast/tone difference between the left hand side and the right which could be balanced.

    Thanks folks.

Jamie - that would be because of the fine dust kicked up by the giraffe on the LHS.
Shreyas - I too love shallow DOF for animals in the BG, but alas had no time to try anything else here.
