    Default Hungry Eyes..

    Attached Images Attached Images

Image captured this Sunday morning @ Emdoneni Rehab Centre for cats in Hluhluwe, KZN, RSA.
The owners, Louis and Cecille Nel were so kind to give us the care giver (Dumisane) and a hour without no tourists on Sunday morning with the cats.
They have African Wildcat, Caracal, Servet and Cheetah that they are trying to rehab, and returning to the wild-more images to follow...
Unfortunately some of the cats can not be returned because of their injuries or history, but can be used for breeding.
The weather did not play the part, overcast weather made us use high ISO to capture the images.
The caracal was walking in circles around us sitting on our hunches, touching our backs, and us trying to focus before he completes his circle...

    Here are techs:
Nikon D3S with 300F2,8 handheld with VR on.
    ISO 1000
    1/800@ F4,5

There is a green cast under cheeks and down the chest- this was a reflection from the green foliage- did layer with desat on greens, affected the eyes too…
Metadata in LR5 showed my high ISO NR was off, did not notice?!!!

    Crits welcome..
    Regards

    Andre.

Andre, my high ISO noise reduction is NEVER on - I just find it destroys detail where in PP I can have more control over precise noise reduction where it's needed most (if it's needed at all).
I like the close-up of this cat, rare to see these exquisite details - and those eartufts!

I see the green cast, perhaps select that area only and use "color balance" to tweak it? Tried something quickly in this RP...

Love the details the 300 f/2.8 is giving here Andre, only ever seen 2 fleeting glimpses in the wild of these guys. Morkel's RP has taken care of the green cast nicely.

Hi Andre I like the crop and intense look, the curled tip of the tongue is a great touch to the overall image.

Personally I don't think ISO1000 is that high, especially with Nikon, therefore I do think you could have pushed it a bit more for a bit more DOF. The 3/4 view is nice, especially as you can see both eyes. To me the tongue looks a like high on the red/magenta easily controlled, likewise perhaps the fur could go a bit warmer, although you were there, so... There is a magenta tinge in the whites of the chin and part of the white lower leg. I find Morkel's RP quite saturated, especially the green of the foliage and the tongue too. If you do decide to revisit the file then perhaps double processing may be another option. Just my take.

Steve, perhaps then the OP wasn't embedded as sRGB cause I didn't touch saturation and merely took colour balance AWAY from green (albeit towards magenta which may have pushed the tongue a bit in that direction)...

Hi Morkel, just checked both files, OP has an embedded profile, however the RP appears to… that's where it's crept in .

Yep, but easily done in the 'heat of the moment'.

Not sure if this helps or not, but cannot remove that red tinge/cast in the white of the chin/jaw.

Hi Andre - seems that you and Gabriela spent your hour with the cats well. Nice low pov and pose. The tongue flick takes it up a notch. I too would have gone for a bit more dof. Good advice above about removing the reflected color cast.

    Rachel

Thank you Steve, for some reason when I wanted to post a reply, the thread was closed?

Thank you Morkel for valuable input, Mark, Steve and Rachel.

Did several masked layers to desat greens, magenta etc. Added a bit of saturation-red in fur.

Tried to get the effect from Morkel and Steve.

    WDYT?
    Regards

    Andre.

Well, now that you've all had a chance to play with Andre's image I'd just like to say that this is a really neat portrait of a beautiful cat. The various reposts do improve the colour and also have the effect of making it look sharper.
    Good team effort.
