Bird was called in with audio and presented close viewing. Post processing was global raw adjustment in Lightroom only.

Optimally I would have liked more of the tail visible and closer to the same plane as the eye. However I had only heard this species before so it was a great treat to have such close views and come up with a photo like this. C & C welcome.

Hello Doug, a real frame filler take your point about the tail, you have some super detail and the bird looks very sharp and stands out very well against that nice BG.

Stunning shot. I like the composition, the clean background and the yellow spots on the rock.
Perfect sharpness. I assume this was a 4/600 + 2x. I use the same combo (600 II + 2x III) and the sharpness of that is amazing. Many people don't use a 2x because they think it is not sharp and they miss so many opportunities.

Beautiful bird with lovely perch and background and excellent detail!

Agree with your self-critique. A bit tight on the bottom for me.
I have never seen this bird so I could be wrong but there seems to be fairly strong blue cast and maybe some green as well.

I think I am most impressed with the fact that you hand held at 1/400 sec!!
Bird looks great with lots of detail.
I see a bit of posterization in the BG and would try to fix that although I have yet to come up with a really good way to fix that. Doesn't affect a print anyway.
I would like to see a bit more room all around as a personal preference,
    Gail

Thanks all for the comments. Yes it was the 600 f4 IS II and yes it is an amazing lens that handles the 2X converter well. Also, the 4-stop IS makes hand holding so much easier.

Mike good call on the color balance. I just adjusted white balance off the neck area and I like it a lot better.

Also, I have cropped it a little less tight here and I think I prefer it. I sometimes get carried away with showing as much detail as possible.

Doug, the repost really is quite wonderful...plenty of detail and complimentary habitat. I would work on the background...still see noise and posturization.

Congrats on getting this species for the first time. I'd love to even see one. Great detail, and I love the lichen-flecked rock. Agree with your self-critique about the tail. The repost addressed all of my nits. Quite a lovely image.
