The pond this fella was in is very small (and shrinking every year), so anything with a full body view plus room for the comp was awash with distracting elements in the BG. It was best to wait for it to come closer to the boardwalk and go for cleaner portraits. I was happy when the green speculum was visible on this particular pass as it was hidden almost all the time. Hopefully it will stick around for a couple more weeks so I can photograph it in full prime breeding plumage!

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/320s., f/6.3, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, CCW rotation and otherwise FF, a few specks removed in the water via spot removal tool.

Beautiful image Daniel, the bright green patch on the wing contrasts with the brown and orange fall colours

    Details are great too

Really surprised with the sharpness at 1/320 HH with that lens + TC

Fabulous close up. The green showing on the duck and in the water is icing on this cake.

Love the detail and the colors. Perfect HA. I do find myself wishing to see the whole duck but understand your choice of comp as you explained.
    Just beautiful Daniel!

A lovely shot, Daniel. The colors, details and comp are terrific, and the green speculum tops it off.

Hi Daniel, any chance you are able to set the gear up on a tripod, pop the tripod in the water and use an angle finder whilst lying on the boardwalk. Just a thought for a slightly lower, waterline POV?

    Cheers
