    Default Lioness @ Mara

    Attached Images Attached Images

She was one of the mating pairs that I photographed and posted earlier. I wished for a bit more room around esp on the sides, but his was full frame.
Camera Canon EOS 5D Mark III
    Exposure (1/640)
    Aperture f/6.3
    Focal Length 500 mm
    ISO Speed 100
    Exposure Bias 0 EV
It was taken at around 10 am so light was a bit harsh.

    Hi Sanjeev

You have kind of critiqued the image yourself. "light to harsh , not enough room at sides" . Only advice I can offer in a situation when you are so close. Is to try a different perspective a different crop.

Great composition and the like the direction the lion is looking at.
As you wrote, a bit close but this is the problem with prime lenses - and why I love my 4/200-400 1.4x :-)

You made the best of it and I like this a lot despite the points you already mentioned.

This lioness is lovely, even in the bright light! Very nice pose and nice bkgd colors with no distractions. You can add a bit more space on the sides by cropping a little larger than the image and using content-aware to fill that border. You might have to do some clean-up depending on how the edges look.

Hi Sanjeev - you've handled the harsh light well on this one. I agree with your self-critique about the space but overall, this is a nice image.

Hi Sanjeev, in a situation like this where the Lioness is going no where, you could have got the driver to pull back, having a bit more room and cropping slightly would not have hurt the IQ, You did well in the harsh light, but look to applying a Channel adj or a luminosity adj to the lioness. just brings up a bit more depth of colour and helps the highlights.

Noted Steve, will do so next time. We had already shifted positions twice and as the news of mating spread a few more vehicles zeroed in blocking our free movement around the spectacle. Thanks for your inputs everyone.

Light looks ok given the time of day. Without adding canvas, not sure there's much you can do with this one. Since it's a large file, you could consider a large crop for composition, in which case the opportunities are endless.

A situation like this is always a difficult one to deal with and can be delt with in a number of different ways, in addition to the ones mentioned above, you could have also shot the image as a composite of 3 or 4 images including a little more space all around and then stitching them altogether to create the final image. Otherwise detail looks good and you handled the harsh light well. I would also perhaps clone out that piece of grass across her body.

Hi Sanjeev, a powerful looking lioness, and you have done well with the light. To try and rectify an already tight comp, I would take some off the top.

    Sanjeev,
I like the relaxed pose of the lioness, and agree you could use some more space around. Have you tried some other crops?
Also agree that you may want to explore some luminosity and color adjustments to bring forth the tone of the lioness. May also want to try some shadow adj to the eyes to make them pop!

You've received some good pointers here Sanjeev. Brendon's suggestion of stitching a pano if the lioness was quite static is a great one...as is Peter's to look for something out-of-the-box.
    Light well handled...
