Two male Waterbuck fighting in late afternoon light - they were a long way from the bird hide with the light almost directly behind them. Canon 1DIV, EF 300 f2.8II, 2XTCIII, 1/320, f8, ISO 400 on beanbag rest. Cropped and worked up in CS6. Comments welcome.

Nice interaction between the 2 subjects

I think you had everything against you on this one unfortunately.

The top foliage detracts from the main subject and I feel a tighter crop could have worked a bit better

    Maybe something like this?

Cannot do more with the light and saturation as only have a crappy MS Editor at work. Its so you get an idea of what i meant about tighter crop

Very nice interaction, but the light here is just not your friend. Just thinking out loud, but what if you attempt to make the waterbucks into more of a silhouette and emphasis the glow you already have on the hair under their bellies and legs, as well as the glow on the grass heads? I would consider more of a vertical crop, following the upward lines of the tall grasses. I'm thinking more of a graphic image and presentation.

Gerhard, I just tried working with this image and I think B&W could be the way to go. I could not achieve my silhouette idea in color and started to experiment with B&W. There are lots of ways to play with this image that way.

So now that I started playing with this, here is a quick possibility using Nik Silver Efex, full sprectrum preset. WDYT as a jumping off point?

    Hi Gerhard,

you have great light to do a backlighting image here, in color or in B&W. Try it out. Had a bit fun, but thought you should try it out, if you like. If you like to stay with this image like this, bring a bit more out of the bodies. Your ORG post I like the best. Apply a LCE to their bodies that might work! Sorry did not try that while I had it in PS, only the backlighting and B&W. Like it that way the best

    Have a great eve

    Ciao

PS no... have a great morning and day, you are down under. May I ask from whereabout ? South means for me Nullabor or Esperance? Loved it there and has the whitest beach sand on earth

Forgot, you have no color profile assigned to your image. Check here in Steve's K. post http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...-for-Web-in-PS

This image has some potential, Gerhard. I like the back-light around the sparring bucks and through the reeds. I cropped a bit off the RHS for this version, added some midtone contrast and also darkened the image a bit to get more mood out of it...what do you think?

The tall blades of back-lit grass in the BG makes this image pop. Liked Morkel's edit on it.
The buck on the left seems a lazy fighter

Tough situation and hard to handle. The RPs are mostly improvements. I wonder if there's been a little too much NR on the subjects as they look v smooth.

Thanks to everyone`s efforts with this difficult photo - there sure were a few interesting variations presented.
