    Default You Looking At Me?

    Attached Images Attached Images

This female polar bear climbed up on a large piece of floating ice so that she was at eye level with us. This was taken at about 7 am after both the bear and we had gotten a few hours of sleep.

Monopod from moving boat, slight crop from the top so that bg is all ice, luminosity mask, levels, curves, selective burning, sharpened in CS6.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Looking at and admiring.

Nice control of the highlights and detail here Rachel. However, I am not sure how anyone could sleep on a trip like this - but I am sure the onboard booze stash helps. I don't have anything to add regarding the processing but wish for a little room on the LHS and up top but not a image killer by any means.

    Cheers

Thanks Sanjeev and Jamie, much appreciated. Jamie - when it looked like the bear was trying to bed down and get out of the wind for a while, we backed off. The bridge kept her in sight as she slept and we grabbed a couple of hours too. We then watched her sleep for a couple of more hours and approached when she woke up. On these trips it seems you sleep when you can and mostly in your clothes so you can grab a camera and be on deck in minutes.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

The IQ on this is outstanding Rachel. Love the tiny flecks of light and shades of color in the snow and ice and the texture of the fur. I can almost feel the cool air falling out of the screen and across my desk.

Love it, what a smirk on that face.

    Love the textures and colors.

Only thing that is bothering me and I think it's almost an optical illusion is the BG blackish horizontal line just above the bears back which is almost the same angle of the bear and I think for me anyways its making the bear look more at an angle than actually is.

Meaning (I think) that line is making it seem like it isn't quite eye level and a little tilted.

Thanks for posting and letting me imagine the moment.

Well captured with lots of detail on bear and FG. Love the POV. Agree with Jamie- would like a tiny bit of space behind bear.
    Regards

Thanks everyone. Jamie and Andre - I agree about a bit more space to the lhs but I don't have it there and generally I don't like to add canvas.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Rachel, great details, colors, and exposure. Since you don't have more room on the LHS, why not go the opposite ay for a tighter crop to focus more on the bear? Loi

Hi Rachel, shooting in these conditions is tricky and can throw the metering out, but you have handled things very well. Love the detail & definition in the snow/ice, colours and clarity look spot on, likewise the techs. Not so struck on the comp, but both you and Anette have spoilt us with previous images so it's hard not to compare.

I am not sure how anyone could sleep on a trip like this
You can Jamie and sometimes your body demands it, but sleeping in your kit is not always ideal, a bit like a pilot waiting to be scrambled.

Great lighting and detail in the fur... Love the blue in the ice! Great expression on the bears face as well!

    Hi Rachel,

I did not read all comments. No time for that, only your post.
Comp wise, would love to see the FF. For me a bit "breathing air" is missing on top, but this is just me.

Details and everything else sits for me. Very nice image, love the face look, especially the mouth

    Have a great afternoon/eve

    Ciao
    Anette

    Hi Rachel,

This is a nice image which is perfectly processed as always. I like the look on the bear's face, but the composition just isn't working for me. It's too tight on LHS and there's too much ice below. If you like the bear's pose (and I do) then perhaps consider a wider pano shot cutting off some of the ice in front. Perhaps 3cms off the bottom?

Thanks Ed, that's a good crop suggestion.

Quirky expression on this bear, Rachel. Again I love the hues of blue and white coming out here. Exposure well handled.
I'm not too crazy personally about the ice block running down behind the rump but nothing you can do about that. Not a deal-breaker in any event.

It's funny how they can twist their faces when they are trying to smell you.

Hello Rachel, looks like the bear was sniffing breaky. Must be a fun trip and being scrambled for polar bears would beat getting scrambled for a flight anyday.
