These guys are fun to photograph, but they don't stay perched very long. They come in, land on the perch, and quickly jump off to the get their food.

The bg, as Doug mentioned in his Scaled Quail post, are the Chamisas. They make for a very pleasant background. This was shot in Doug's backyard (he's been awesome in letting me come over from time to time to shoot).

    Shooting info:
    Nikon D800 | 500 f/4 VR
    1/1600 | f/6.3 | ISO 400

    Hi Miguel,
Who knew that one of the perks of moving to Alb would be Doug!!
    lovely image.
I love the color combination of blue and yellow. really nice textured perch.
Very good IQ and love the eye. Did you do eye doctor work?
Since this was a set up ( controlled situation with lots of second take opportunity)I might have chosen a higher ISO to get a bigger DOF and that might have covered the tail.
I like this a lot. TFS,
    Gail

    Miguel:

Lovely background, nice that the perch is parallel to the image sensor (an interesting as well). Colors are great overall (as mentioned by Gail)

The dof is OK for me, but one of the joys of doing setups is the chance to try different settings, so a bit smaller f/stop on some future tries would be interesting.

    Cheers

Glad to see you finally got Doug to experiment with some photography in his back yard. He needed motivation.

Love image. Super details and BG.

Miguel, this looks gorgeous! More lighting on the rear part of the body would have been nice but it certainly looks OK as is too. Glad you and Doug are getting some good mileage out of his backyard!

Really nice Miguel. One of the fun things about setup photography (as pointed out by Gail and Randy) is that you can refine both the setup and your technique over time. Looking forward to getting things just right!

Great shot of one of my favorite birds. My wife prefers Stellars Jays, I say Western Scrub Jays are one of the most elegant birds around. Always a huge bonus to me when the iris color shows.

Gail, Thanks for the compliments. The eye was doctored just a bit. I tried not to lighten the iris too much, but I think that's what you are asking about? I'm trying to find a good balance between adding a bit of pop and not making it look unrealistic
