    Default A Hunt Aborted

We saw this lioness trying to hunt two wildebeest separated from the main herd. She had a young male lion for a mate who had a bad limb and stayed behind. By the time we got there, she was doing her stand and stare intently at the wildebeest at a distance and approached them a few steps at a time. We stopped and watched by the side of the road. Unfortunately, there were half dozen vehicles there as well and these new comers, once they realized a hunt was about to take place, raced towards the two wildebeest to position themselves for the hunt and in the process spooked the wildebeest. So she knew it was hopeless and sat down. This was a looking back at her mate at a distance away, looking so sad. Our guide suspected that she might have pups as well who might go hungry that day.

The trees in the background had what looks to me like "Fall colors." Seemed quite late as we were there in late June.

Slightly cropped and rotated for comp.

    Appreciate your comments.

Hi Loi - sharpness and exp look good. Did you blur any of the bg because I would expect a bit more to be in focus at f10? I would apply some NR to the bg. I think it needs a little more cw rotation. Comp wise I would prefer her a little more to the right in the frame with more space to look back to on the left.

Hi Loi, I quite like the comp, although for me I would loose a little off the foot of the image, perhaps just above your name. I can see where you were going re: fall colours, but overall the colour looks just a little flat (? just my take) and so I would try and boost them, it then looks, I think more to where you anticipate going? With the 2x you are limited to single focus (centre point only) and this limits your crop, but I would have just kept to the f/8 default.

I like the comp Loi, and I really like the light that is almost centered on her. I do agree with Rachel that some nr in the background would improve the image.

Hi Everyone, thank you very much for commenting on my image.

Rachel, the minute I posted the OP, I realized that it could have used some NR. You were right on.

Steve, you were right about too much space at the bottom and the "fall colors" were quite muted. I took some of the bottom and played with the Hue/Sat and Selective Colors. Not sure what I'm doing here, but gave it a try. I could play with Selective colors some more, but thought I should stop and post a version here. I kind of like the "painting" look here.

Hi Loi, based on the OP I just kept it simple and thought all you needed to do was add a Luminosity adjustment, this was where I was going in my initial reply, I feel the RP goes a little too yellow.

    How about this?

Hi Loi, most is said already above. RP from Steve K. does it for me. The light is very nice in this.

    Have a great day

Light is nice with the shadows falling across the ground elsewhere. I like her pose. I think I would have gone landscape perhaps with a 1.4x rather than 2x but I guess you had little time to change from tracking her to doing a lionscape shot! Steve's effort has improved it as usual.

Steve, you were SO right about my RP had too much Yellow. Thanks for the tips on Lumino mask. I did apply 30% lumino mask on the OP, but should have done more to bring out the colors of the leaves. Loi

Hi Loi, you know how it all works, just take your time, explore and when you have achieved what you want, then post. You have a lot of tools and a greater understanding now to think with and implement, just take your time.

Loi - I find it also helps to toggle back and forth when making certain changes to see the effect of the change, whether it is too much or too little. Also take a look back at how far you've come in a short time.
