It's a lovely image and I can see why she likes it. My first impressions are that you might have pushed the clarity slider a bit too far (or if you haven't, perhaps try dropping it a bit) and that you need to level your horizon....

Hi Loi - this is really nice and I too can see why your wife wants a print. Definitely level the horizon before printing and I might prefer a bit more room below if you have it.

Hi Ed, I used Clarity 10 in LR5. What do you see as a tell tale sign of "too much Clarity"? Does it look oversharpened? I think a full hi resolution image in print won't look too sharp if that what caught your attention here. I debated whether I should not used Saturation at all, but here it is also 10 in CS6.

hi Rachel, sorry, no room at the bottom. My wish was the same. It was taken before I learned the business of the "virtual" legs.

Thanks for reminding me to rotate the image.

    Hello Loi!

You made me look at my giraffe images but I do not have anything this beautiful in my collection-the landscape is magic ! I agree with Rachel about the levelling of the horizon. Lovely capture, and I am sure Mrs. Nguyen will be delighted with the print!

    Kind regards,

Hi Everyone, thank you so much for your feedback. The leveling of the image makes it much better, but also chopped off some needed space at the bottom. So I added a little canvas, hope it is not so obvious. Also opened up the mid tone of the giraffe on the left a little.

Yes, Tarangire is so beautiful. We enjoyed our short two nights stay there and I wished we had stayed longer.

Hi Loi, the clarity shows up as areas of high local contrast, where detail starts to be lost in favour of blacker blacks and paler whites. As a rule (with very few exceptions) I don't add clarity to any image unless shot in very low contrast situations, and even then, usually with a brush or mask. I think reducing the clarity back to zero, and then applying some local contrast using the brush would bring this up a bit more. Worth working on as it's a great image with nice composition. Your stitching at the bottom looks ok to me!Ed

    Hi LOi,

have read the above comments about clarity. My question is: What did you sharpen in this image and what not? Did you use selective sharpening?
If you sharpened the bushes behind the Giraffe RHS, middle and LHS, drop this. Let the image sit somewhere 10 min and go back how it looks than, or post it again. In this image I would not add more than 30-40% sharpness to the surroundings of the subjects! Maybe that helps. For me the bushes look to sharp, they even compete a bit with the Giraffes. Just my and MHO and first impression

Have a great evening and hope this print will be big

    Ciao

    Hi Loi

I really like this. The giraffes are posing nicely for you. I think your repost is much better. Time to sent it to print :) Well done!

    Hi Anette:

Yes, I did sharpened the low bushes on the LHS, RHS and right behind the left Giraffe. I can see the abrupt transition between those and the other bushes. Good suggestion. I also think in this low resolution, the bushes tend to look oversharpened and I should have reduced them vs. the giraffe. Just a bit sloppy I think.

    Thank you.

Liking the repost Loi but thinking the sky could be toned down a touch. Looks a little bright still.

Hi Loi, the RP is much better, it did require a rotation, likewise the colour needed a slight adjustment to. Perhaps going to f/9 might have helped on the SS? Like the 'layering' of the BKG, gives the image a nice depth.

Hi Everyone, thank you so much for your comments. I will try to do another RP to see if I have addressed all of the issues raised.

Anette, here in this second RP, I only sharpened the giraffe. and i'm thinking a 20 X 30" !

Steve, getting the colors right is one of my worst skill. Here I tried to pick the mid gray point and the resulting image had a little more blue - cooler - and I also eliminated the Saturation. Let me know if I'm going the right direction.

    Thanks again.

Late to this one Loi. Lovely layering and poses, I particularly like the baobab trees in the distance, so iconic of Tarangire.
    Last RP for me.

I agree with Edward - I use clarity sparingly, and in fact I regularly pull it down to about -30 on most images, then paint back about +30-40 clarity on the subject only (making it effectively +10 clarity on the subject and -30 clarity on the surrounds).
