I'm in a sharing mood tonight. Sitting watching the BBC WPOTY awards unfold on Twitter, haha, so thought I'd post one. I was a finalist this year but didn't make the final cut, always a reason to try again next year.
Congrats to our Peter Delaney who has bagged a runner-up spot already, along with many of my fellow South African's who are raking in the awards tonight...Represent!

The endangered Black Rhino. Something a little more "standard" than my previous post, though I'd like to think the angle takes it up a notch...
A treat to see one alive and well these days!
This old bull was a real poser.

    Techs:
    Nikon D800
    Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR-II @ 190mm
    f8.0 | 1/500 SS | ISO-220
    Pretty much full frame

    Hi Morkel

As you said, a real poser. And of course, you know how to make the most of it. Very nice with the low angle and wide enough DOF for him to be sharp from nose to rump. How about taking the exposure down just a notch? (I guess you have the exposure this light for a reason, please tell us.)

Hi Morkel - Great image from a very pleasing angle which does take it up a notch. I like the DOF and the details and texture visible on the forehead, horn and rump. I like that the rhino is above the horizon which elevates it the the magnitude it deserves. I agree with Gregor on the brightness/exposure and would also like to hear your thoughts.
    Cheers

Thanks guys. I merely processed the shot in line with the kind of light I was experiencing during my time at this location. It could go darker, but perhaps only selectively so that the eye doesn't get lost.

Hi Morkel - really great low pov, details and sharpness. He does look like he's posing for you. Comp works well too with the slight angle towards you. Just a very minor point, there's a little bit of a selection issue on the inside of the right rear leg.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Morkel, super POV, very nice details and sharpness. I like the colours and the exposure looks fine on my iMac. Super shot! were you in your 'bunker' while taking the shot? 190 mm is real close !!

Morkel, great POV and details on the rhino skin texture here. The light has a very slight golden shine, which is lovely. Nice to see the horn from this angle. Loi

    HI Morkel,

great pose of the chap. To me it looks that all is set, but ( there it goes again ) I have to agree with Rachel. After reading her comment I had to search for what she was pointing out.
Maybe she has a magnifier glass! Just kidding

    Have a great evening

    Ciao

Hi Morkel, a bit of a 'mixed bag' this year, thought Wims was close to old Grants image, but Wims has more going for it, same location I guess?

You already know my thoughts on this which were very minor, so no need to regurgitate them, as know one has commented/spotted them, ah, well one of them, sorry Rachel. Great POV.

    Thanks for chipping in, everyone...

Steve, Rachel - here's a 100% unprocessed crop from RAW.
There were various light-coloured trees in the treeline around the waterhole. He was just standing where this light bark showed at the edges of the legs...

...and yes...that's the last vestige of rhino poop falling

Wow, Morkel bet you couldn't line it up like that again if you tried. Perhaps burn it a bit to lessen the effect?

    Thanks,
    Rachel

Interesting POV on this one Morkel. How did you get the angle? Shooting below the Rhino downwind I hope? ;) Would a mid tone tweak to the tree line help give a little more depth to support the striking sharp Rhino?

Loved the WPOTY results this year and I Peter looks a happy man in the photos he shared on FB today.

Sadly Morkel, now with the world wide coverage of the location, it will certainly put the location on the map and open the flood gates of people trying to emulate the image.

Indeed. Shem's booking office will be buzzing .
Luckily, THIS location is not commercial or accessible to most.

Bit late to comment, love the angle, agree to bring down brightness a bit.
    Stunning image, Morkel

Ah now I see that. Must be a special place to get so close to these huge beasts and I hope it stays special and doesn't become a zoo of photographers all trying to emulate whats already been done and appreciated.

Dominated?? Meh you guys just got lucky but it makes up for your lack of rugby skills

Wonderful shot. I like the composition.
The low angle is what makes this special!
