    Default Good night sleep tight!

    Attached Images Attached Images

Polar bear sleeping high above the cliffs. He was about 20-30m up. On this island have been 3 PB's hanging around with a herd of Walruses. One of the PB's has been in bad shape, hungry for sure. Maybe they try to catch a Walrus, but naturally they don't! Have read that when the hunger is to big they give a try. Other PB's I have seen eating sea weed on the beach. All waiting desperate that the ice comes back!. No trash in this image
    Only a full moon.

We took turns to photograph this PB up there with the 5 zodiacs. Many have only horizontal images, I have both. Thanks to a little flea I took along this trip from Steve K. I certainly like the vertical better. I took 497 images of this PB, since light was gone from the sun, AF did not pick up the PB very often, my MKIV was at the end the better run with this one. But have a few images with a wider view, as well with the waterline to see how high he was up there!
Conditions to shot, rough sea, all in the boat moving a bit faster, since that kind of image is not out there very often. All trying hard and of course fast moves make a zodiac shake more. My flea told me, take your time and I did, but was hard to have a still hand when the "ground" is shaking than my body shakes too!!!. We spent about 1-2 hours just with him.
Have to add, I took 497 images, just because I wanted the moon to sit where I wanted. I have images the moon is just everywhere. The thing was, get the zodiac driver to drive where I want and hopefully no wave coming to drift us back! Worked for a bout 10 images Not because of the driver, no, because the sea has it's own mind!

This is FF, my LR procedure, WB, a graduate filter, tried to get more out of the moon. PS Fine tuning and ripping my .... off for detail in the PB!! Nada. Struggling with high ISO!

    MKIV
ISO whopping 4000 ( everything below was just not going, well some did with the shorter lens 70-200 & 2x )
    Lens 300mm f/2,8 & 2x ext. III
    f/5.6 1/800

Fee free to rip it apart, but also puzzle it together again

    Hi Anette

I think this is one of the best pictures I have seen here. It is just perfect. I love the structures of the stonewall, the comp with the moon, and the fantastic sleeping bear. Lovely colors too. All working so good together. I clearly understand you seeing this possibility and having to work for it. It was worth it. All I can say is WOW. Maybe some will comment on that some of the shadows is all black. That donīt bother me, I like that there is some deep black there. OH... just one thing. I think your logo is a bit to big and dominant.

I'll second that! Best photo I've seen you post...anywhere
If you don't enter this into the big ones next year I will fly to Switzerland and personally beat down your door.
It just works so well. The polar bear is almost luminous!

    Hi Gregor & Morkel,

was looking badly for the Thank you button, was lost with last update of the website, I guess!

Thanks so much Morkel. Looking forward seeing you here in Swissyland to beat me to it We have a guest room, your family fits in our house too
No idea in which contest I will add this one. Maybe in our local one, winning the latest cheapest Nikon, there goes my start to switch brands
There are quite a few more people having this kind of image, but not sure with the moon in the position. As I said, I have many with all over the moon. Might even have a better one. Must check, not through all yet.

Gregor, the watermark is so big, since it is easy to get the images out of this website. I am tired running after my images which some jerks steal and post them as their own in some websites. Morkel has the same prob. They just crop out the watermark and post them somewhere. I even found my images for free download as wallpaper or whatever on the web! No thank you, so this one will have a bigger watermark as the others, sorry for it, but I can only run as fast as I can, but not fast enough for jerks

Have a great evening and thanks so much

    Ciao

    Hi Anette

Iīm all for the idea to enter this in competitions. I think chances is pretty small that anyone else out there pulled this off, even if they were there. Iīm sorry to hear that you and Morkel have problems with photos beeing stolen. If you need a watermark to protect them it obvious need to be bigger and more centralized, but preferably with much less opacity. I think one central function of this website is that it is easy to download the pictures. We need it in our critic-process. And for people who want to steal a photo - those download protections is so easy to go around. If it shows on the screen you can copy it. So please BPN, donīt go there. Sorry for the OT.

Hi Anette - this looks great (much better than the sneak peak). Congrats on persevering to get the shot you envisioned. Only thing that might take it to an even higher level for me would be to have the moon in focus but I understand you couldn't maintain enough ss and stop down to accomplish that. I'm sure some would do a composite of a sharp moon and the sharp bear. Congrats on this one, a definite large wallhanger and contest entry.

    Rachel

Wonderful! The bear is luminous, as said, and wonderful light on the rocks. Great exposure on the moon too -- that's not always easy to manage.

How sad about their hunger -- I think that will get a lot worse with the ice melting.

Anette, this is stunning. Simply gorgeous. Your black looks good, you can see the details on the cliff. The PB is small in the frame, but his eyes are in good focus. The only thing that I dare to suggest is to consider slightly crop the bottom and left. Loi

I don't comment here often anymore but this pic made me pull the keyboard closer.

This is what a photograph should look like. Top composition and well executed.

Hi Rachel, Sanjeev, Diane, Stephen & Loi,

thanks so much or your kind comments.

Loi, I never would crop the bottom off, since this PB was high up in the cliffs. Even higher as you can see right here. Just add a double amount of cliffs underneath this image, than you would hit the water line. With this vertical image maybe the viewer tries to imagine the cliffs underneath. When I look at a horizontal you never get the impression that he was high up, the impression of a horizontal is: Well, he is just maybe 5m up on cliffs!! I wanted to bring the viewers eye to move further down in their imagination, see the whole scene, as I have witnessed. Well I try
So far I have that done with a few friends, the horizontal image not much was asked about, but the vertical they asked, how high was he up and ...and...and...? There you go

Rachel, the sneak peak was done fast, just grabbed one image on the camera screen, before downloading all images on my Hard drive. It was even zoomed in on the camera back! The flea always was sitting on my ear telling me download after every session that enough space is available for the PB doing a head stand! Guess that sneak peak was even one shot with the 70-200mm & ext. Not sure. The moon I have sharp, you mentioned already, than I have to combine 2 images, one moon, one bear.
I was glad that at least the bear was sharp in the image. Must check the other images with the 70-200mm, maybe there is the moon sharp too, never know. Maybe the lucky duck hit me

    Thank you very much everybody

    Have a great day

    Ciao Anette

This is a real winner. When I read your intro I was wondering why you would be nervous posting it - it's great! I would agree with Loi about losing a tiny bit off the bottom (to just below Annette) but I think it's ok on the LHS. Stunning and I hope to see it in a competition next year.

    Hi Edward,

thanks so much. I was not at all nervous to post this image
May I ask you for the reason of the crop! I am very interested to hear yours and Loi's thoughts about the crop
    Again, thanks so much

Hi Anette, everyone loves your image I can see! Regarding the crop, I'm thinking a slight crop at the bottom will reduce the darkest area of the cliff. If you want to maintain the same aspect ratio, then you could crop slightly the left to bring the PB more in a visible, off center position. If you take the PB and the moon as the main subject, they are actually quite center. Loi

    Hi Annette,

I've been looking at this again, and I am now questioning myself. It's actually hard to judge with your signature over it (but I completely understand why you have put it there). I think the black area at the bottom acts as a good cut-off point and perhaps the paler rocks at the very bottom are distracting from the main event. However, there is nothing wrong with the image - it's a winner - and perhaps I'd not have said anything if Loi's comment hadn't made me think of it!

Anette-this is stuff most photographers dream about. You have vision, you have the eye for capturing that which is unique and you certainly have the processing skills. My eyes -perhaps not yet experienced enough when it comes to photography-are still able to recognise beauty in nature. I am so drawn to the colours and composition of this image. It is overwhelmingly touching and beautiful-a large yet little bear, lost in this enormous landscape-what beauty you have here, what privilege to witness this. Congratulations Anette!

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

    Hi Edward & Loi,

thanks so much. Got your point. Checked in the big file with eyedropper, it does not go lower all over that area than 5. For me this is enough, but can change a bit higher, since I pulled over that area a graduate filter in LR!
If you like you can go in my website in the Wild Arctic portfolio. This image is the second image. When you click underneath the image on the thumbnail you stop the slideshow.
The watermark is quite small in there, but after the response I get in here, will figure something out for that one in my website. Have enough running done this year!! You cannot steal images in there the easy way, but the ones who steal do know the way to get around!
Thanks so much again for your response on this.

    Have a great evening

    HI Gabriela,

always have to laugh with your comments. One tip I give you. Read in this forum...read more .. and learn. My processing would not have been near there as it is today. A big Thank you to Mr Detail, Mrs Detail ( Rachel, the one with magnifier glass when looking at images ) and of course Morkel. Also a very big thank you to Morkel, bringing me to this forum. I am very thankful for that.
For the vision, follow your heart and stop making images for others than yourself

Thanks so much, have a great evening

I'll second that! Best photo I've seen you post...anywhere
I would second that and far better than the 'back of the camera' image. Personally both you & Rachel have posted so great & diverse images of these animals, but both have two Outstanding images to date and this is one of them, and the images are a real please to view, savour and enjoy!

The plight of these animals, like so many endangered species, is a real tragedy, but the Polar bear is one of the most dangerous we have on this planet and MUST at all times be given huge respect and the reasons why I said what I said to you ladies before your trips!

Keep them coming Anette & Rachel, but perhaps alternate postings.

a very big bow to you from me. I am very thankful that I have met you in person before my trip. More than thankful for our "hours" chat thankful for the info for the trip and for sure for the flea on my ear.

Will see what alternate postings I can do!

Many thanks again, Steve ( Milka Bars will be in the Christmas box & Rösti box for Alison )

Hey, you are welcome, but also what is nice to see is other members extending their friendship beyond the Forum in helping each other too, lets hope that is 'contagious'.

Sorry we can't be at the Eiger with you, but based on the OP I might just have to press 'Format' card.

    Hope the 'arc' is OK.

Just one comment on the oof moon. I would leave it oof. I have a good friend with a gallery that has some great shots of wildlife with full moons or lightening striikes. He's told me that his sales of those are down because people think he just photoshopped them in.
And I agree with all the accolades above, super job Annete.

I agree...a lot of "moon composites" floating around on 500px too. The moon and the animal CANNOT both be sharp using a telephoto lens. Heck the moon is borderline sharp with a wide-angle at f22...

Hi Dan, Jamie, Stan & Morkel,

thanks so much again for all your kind comments.

I won't change the moon, there is no reason for me to do so.
The few nearly sharp ones I have are done with the 70-200mm & 2x ext. Those would not fit in this image size wise. They are much smaller, very much!

Morkel, that image I won't post in any social media. There are enough already out there from the others from this trip

Thanks again everybody, will sleep with a smile on my face

    Have a great evening
