I was taking some portraits of these juvenile lions at the Mara triangle, since we got close I removed the 1.4X TC and took this pic with the bare 500 II. I wish I had more of the front limb in the pic but I loved the stare I got from the lion. Hope you like it.

Took the liberty of working on a bit on your image.
Cropped tighter, the leg IMHO did not add to image.
Dodge and burn layer with soft light, applying some make-up, burning the wood behind the lion.
    Liked the grasses in FG.

    Andre.

    Hi Sanjeev

Some nice lion portraits you have been posting. On these I like the colors much better (I did not like that reddish cast in the grass from some other pictures), I also think your PP have improved. A better balance in colors, sharpness etc. So very nice and good. You seems to have been out there a lot to get all these wildlife pictures (just envy). I think this is a nice portrait. I would like to have more of the leg, and his body. But as it is now, I think Andres comp and crop is better. And thank you for adding a text to the picture.

Nice clarity, light and attentive look on the face, Sanjeev. The crop/comp just isn't cutting it because you needed more at the bottom (whole leg in) and perhaps less on top. I fully grasp the frustration a fixed lens can bring in these sightings. Andre's crop is better but I'd go even tighter?

Hi Sanjeev, I'm with Morkel with his comments, but it's great to see other members chiming in on congratulating others in their progress, cheers Gregor.

I agree with Andre about going tighter, but with the OP the eyes are looking slightly to the right, not engaging with the viewer, so for me it's not working. However... the RP is using a different image and addresses that issue, spot on, all I think it needs is just to move the whole crop to the right, so you have say 'half' (needs to be done visually) the space between trim & ear and more image content to the right, or again, just tighter with less above & to the LHS, if the IQ allows. The blade of grass is not ideal, but depending on your ethics, easily dealt with.

When you have subjects like this, this is why i suggested before you went, you shoot as you want the shot to be, then, if time allows, change format, shot tighter, looser etc. In doing so you may end up with 30 images plus, but have various options and crops to ensure IQ is maintained when you do you photo editing selection & PP. All good stuff for the future Sanjeev.

RP more interesting and engaging to the viewer. Better than OP I think. Worth working on as would be a nice image and I like the grass framing it.

Hi Sanjeev - nice portrait with good color and sharpness. It does seem to be coming together nicely now. I have to agree though on the comp of the op, you needed to go still wider or even tighter. The new image is in the right direction with better eye contact. The whites however are better controlled and detailed in your op. Keep them coming.

    TFS,
    Rachel
