Default Tule Elk at Sunrise, Point Reyes National Seashore

Seeing Rachel's elk images inspired me to work on an image I took last Christmas at Point Reyes National Seashore, California. I got up early and drove up the mountain in darkness hoping to catch the tule elk herd at sunrise. I almost ran into them as they crossed the road! So I got out and watched them while the sun began to rise, then all of the sudden, there was some light rain in the air and I saw this rainbow over the far mountain.

Appreciate your comments here. This is a tough image for me to process.

    Thank you

Hi Loi - great sighting and I can see why it is a tough image to process. You want to bring up the rainbow but not affect the elk herd. As posted the magentas and reds are very heavy, some of that may be due to the sunrise but it feels too heavy to me and is also affecting the elk herd. This is one of those once in a lifetime shots with the herd, the rainbow and the morning mist. I think you can bring out more detail in the sky too. I'm sure Steve and Morkel will have other suggestions. Maybe shoot us the raw and we'll see what we come up with.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Thanks to Rachel, I went back and found another frame with +1EV exposure, so it is a different frame, but I didn't want to start a new thread.

Hi Loi, how about something like this? Colours, tones, saturation can be easily tweaked to suit personal taste. Likewise the crop as I took a chunk off the foot for more sky? I still think 1/20 is a little too tight.

    cheers

Steve, This is a fantastic rendition of a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to capture an image just at sunrise with the mist over the mountains and a rainbow in the sky while the tule elk herds peacefully going about their day. I was the only one on the mountain at that time. Yes, 1/20 is way too tight. I should have cranked up that ISO!

Again, this will hang in my office, so thank you so much.

Also thanks to Rachel to pointed me to look for an image with more exposure.

A gorgeous scene indeed. Nice feel and mood to the 2nd one - with multiple animals in the frame, the poses can be so important but also almost impossible to get right. It's hard enough to get one animal to perform nicely for the camera!

Steve's taken it up a notch. 1/20 is tight for 70mm, and though you can pull it off "stable hand" wise, the slightest movement by your subjects will keel you over...
