    Default Coming to Drink

I shot this image in the late morning from across the river where buffalos were coming to drink. I took quite a few shots as I could see the composition would be nice with the buffalo coming in from left, drinking and exiting right. I composed this at the top of the frame, knowing that I would cut off to be a pano shot, so ignored all the beach in the foreground. The dust was a nice touch too, but it did reduce the quality of the image, and I was also about 500m away through hazy air. When the 3 came down together to drink, I hoped that was a good moment.

    LR
Increased contrast (quite a bit as was very low on original)
    Boosted saturation a little

    PS
    Selective sharpening
Removed half-buffalo that was exiting rhs of image

    1D4, 500mm f4 @ f8, ISO 800, 1/2000s.

I like this Edward. Well thought out, waited out and executed. IQ looks good but presume you'd see the heat effect on the buffs at full resolution.
Perhaps a slight tweak with some local contrast enhancement (or tonal contrast in Color Efex).

This is a nice shot Ed, i like the pano crop and the reflection, the light haze and dust in the atmosphere all add to this. Well done.

Hi Edward, firstly I really appreciate you taking your time in posting your constructive thoughts & replies to the majority of threads here, it makes a huge difference and bolsters the BPN Community, it's a great help, cheers.

Regarding the image great scene, love the environment setting and different! Pano crop works dovetails oh so well with this image. Not sure about a LCE, but worth exploring to see, however I thought just upping the Yellow & Green saturation for a tad more richness, then a mid tone adjustment (built through channels) to top & tail the image, the slightly darker areas then create the sandwich?

Another cracking image with good thinking behind the camera.

Hi Ed - your patience and vision paid off nicely. Thanks for explaining your thought process. This works really well as wider scene and pano. I think the dust and light rays hitting the dust really add to the image. Will be interested to see the effect some of the suggested tweaks have on the image.

    Rachel

I quite like this image. Thank you for sharing. I would try perhaps just bringing out the dust a little. I kinda wish this was shot early morning with beautiful streaks of yellow

Ed, love this iage. I think the dust actually adds to the image here and I like the light being filtered thru the dust in front of the trees. Great scene and executed well. Loi

    HI Ed

I love this one. I´m becoming more and more a fan of wildlife pictures with a lot habitat. This is a great example. And I do really like that you share your preparations and thoughts for the picture.

Thank you all for such kind and constructive comments. I like this photo a lot and glad that most of you do too.

Attached a RP where I've accentuated existing dust, tried to darken the buffalo sandwich and increase the saturation in other areas.

Hope it's worked out. I like it more.
