    Default Rock Hyrax

These are oft neglected species during the safaris in east Africa, so I thought i'd post an image of one of them clicked on way to Lake Nakuru from Nairobi. Hand held with the 500mm II with the 5D3. I wanted to highlight the feeding behaviour & emphasise the eyes with a shallow DOF using the lens wide open.

Hi Sanjeeve, cute animal! But sorry, this one isn't working for me. The light was quite hash and you need more DOF. F4 isn't going to be good enough. Loi

Loi, the light was quiet soft, it was overcast and drizzly actually. Agree on the DOF though. Lets see what others have to say on this. Thanks for your feedback.

Nice environment shot - I like your thinking. The greenery certainly shows the hyrax in its environment and I love that the mouth is open chewing on leaves!
I might look at trying to fix the colour cast on the hyrax itself as it looks quite blue/purple on the face, and would like a bit more below so as not to cut off the virtual foot.
    Great pic.

Can't add much more Sanjeev to the above, great to see another species.

Hi Sanjeev - always nice to see a different species. Ed has hit the major points - dof and needing more room below. I think where Loi was coming from with the light is that the whites above the eyes and around the nose lack detail and look like they were hot and you tried to recover them in pp. Great pose with the leaf in its mouth and looking up.

Good comments on the colour cast already. Good to see these cuties in a tree (we usually see them on rocks in SA - hence the name).
DOF is shallow but works for me. You are really nailing sharpness in some of these handheld shots at low SS settings .

While I'd echo the comment that it's always good to see the different species, this photo doesn't hit the spot for me. The lightning on the hyrax is too harsh, and I find the flora on the right distracting.
