    Default Dawn

I spent a long weekend in Estes Park, Colorado last weekend. Unfortunately due to the government shutdown we could not go into Rocky Mountain National Park but I tried to make the most out of the elk herds that wander through town and surrounding neighborhoods. It was often difficult to shoot without some hand of man element in the bg. Here's one taken at dawn in a small park overlooking town. As with some of my backlit shots from the arctic, I purposely underexposed to try to augment the backlighting a bit.

Very beautifully done Rachel. I like the scene and the setting here! Great techs as usual.

Hi Rachel, nice to see you continuing your exploring and what you have learnt recently.

Great to capture the breath, conveys the conditions nicely, cold! I like the yellow/golden colours off set against the darker habitat, likewise having parts of rim light on the subject. Personally I might have darkened the light area of habitat that runs along the ridge of the back, it's natural I know, but I feel it could look better if darkened and would help the highlights standout along the back, WDYT? The layer of the FG, MG & BKG gives a nice sense of depth. Not sure if you have lightened/opened up the head & neck? Personally I wished the bottom RHC was a continuation of the majority of FG and not blurred, just catches my eye.

Great mood and exposure control here Rachel!
Steve summed up so many of my thoughts here. All in all a lovely image (dig the breath) and good continuation of your recent postings.

Sanjeev, Steve and Morkel - Thanks very much for the comments and suggestions. Steve - I opened the midtones in levels slightly on the elk cow. I'll take a look at your other suggestions including a slight crop from the bottom to remove that area.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel, it's a beautiful shot that conveys the Colorado mountains well in early October. It was ashamed you couldn't go into the park. I was there last year a bit later and the road thru the park was closed ;(.

The techs here are beyond my skills, so I won't attempt to provide critique. A for the comp, I wish there were more room on top and left to see more of the habitat.

I'm liking the subtle rainbow effect in the captured breath as well as the soft light illuminating the trees in the ULC. Also liking the rim light and the golden grasses.
