    Default Juve Lion Stroll

This juvenile lion was playing with the other young lions and decided to break off from the group and headed straight towards us. This was handheld from the roof hatch, wish I had a chance to shoot from the window for a lower angle but there was tall grass coming in the way. This is more of an shot of the lion in its environment.
Camera Canon EOS 5D Mark III
    Exposure (1/400)
    Aperture f/5.6
    Focal Length 500 mm
    ISO Speed 500
    Exposure Bias 0 EV
I now have learnt my lesson and will avoid shooting in AUTO ISO. I know the 5D3 better and have got a hang of the camera now. i should have used ISO 800 and got faster SS or more DOF. But the image was sharp enough and the 5D3 nailed the focus very well. I used AI servo & BBF.

Ooh Sanjeev, this image has truck loads of detail, content and based on what I can see here, I 100% agree with you, you nailed it! This is certainly a KEEPER, bin the OOF/not sharp ones and badly composed images, no point keeping those, they just fill your HD and they will never be worth salvaging. Also keep AI on and leave it on. Personally I have never shot in Auto ISO mainly because I like to be in control and if I mess it up, that's down to me, but these are valuable lessons you have learnt on this trip and like Loi, it will put you in an excellent position for your next excursion. If we don't make mistakes, how can we learn?

Regarding the image, personally a portrait (vertical) format might have been better, but as presented and if you have it, a bit more FG and a fraction less above might help, basically move the whole crop down a bit, but happy with the space to the LHS. The techs look good, nice DOF, although a fraction more ISO for SS would have been good and with little IQ loss. Again the image is carrying a slight red/magenta % easily corrected with an adjustment in the WB & Tint slider. I got an almost straight 50 mid grey from the fly on the face which helped balance things out more, I think? Adjusting Selective Colour for both Red & Magenta just refines things more. I added a % Lumo adjustment overall, likewise a Curves adjustment to pull up a little more in the Mid tone works better & kinder than Contrast. Added I think 5% Vib and 10% sat, Brightness 8%, I'm just on auto pilot. Selectively dropped the saturation of green in the vegetation, thought it was a tad strong. Remember, the adjustments I make and see on my screen will be different to what you see, so please take this into account. Finally applying some USM to the face only. To my eyes the image has more clarity & detail, but I hope others chime in with their thoughts too. Going cooler/warmer I think then comes down to who you see it, personal taste & recollection.

Obviously Sanjeev, this is just my take and working with only a web 256 colour image is rather limiting, but I hope it shows you what you have in the original capture and highlighted the potential of this image, likewise with the one Morkel reworked from the RAW.

Hi Sanjeev - this is certainly a strong image, shooting angle aside. Steve has given you a lot of guidance above for extracting the detail that is there and improving the color. His rp is much cooler and I might go somewhere in between the two. A little more room below would also be preferable but I imaging this was due to the shooting angle. All those flies have got to be annoying. Glad you've gotten sorted with the 5D3 and learned a valuable lesson with auto ISO. As Steve said, you're set for next time.

Great image - would also opt for a WB between the two.

You've received some great advice from the master above, but I would add that Steve's repost seems a bit "green" to me. The roof hatch works well when shooting into the distance in the Mara, but the window spot is better for these...perhaps as the lion moved you could have avoided the grass eventually for a nice portrait. All hindsight, I know. I too vote for a portrait crop here...
