    Thanks Gail. Now that you've steered me to the woodpecker family I've been able to find an alternative ID that may be a better match. Is this possibly a female grey woodpecker which is fairly common in open wooded areas? The olive woodpecker is describer as having dark olive on the breast and the picture in the book I have ("Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania" by Zimmerman et al) appear to better match the grey woodpecker. Would you be able to take a second look and let me know what characteristics steer you to an olive woodpecker. I've attached a second image that may give you more detail.
