The young lion gave a stare down the barrel when we got close to the pride at Mara Triangle. This was full frame with the 500 II & 1.4 X III and 5DIII. My aim was to get a nice portrait with fine detail.

Hi Sanjeev - Great shot of a beautiful cat! I like the composition and that you framed the lion with the surrounding habitat. The overlapping grasses on the lower jaw do not bother me, I feel it fits the scene. IMO the exposure and colors are spot on and the IQ is good. Too me it looks like the FP is on the tip of the nose and falls off a bit towards the eyes. With your settings you did have some ISO to spare to stopdown for a little more DOF? -not sure if this was doable - you were there. Maybe a bit more sharpening on the eye/lighten the eyes to draw more focus. Small issues, as do I love this image. Like the "mane"-do at the top head between the ears! of the Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Sanjeev,

very nice image. Hennie mentioned already a few things. I would give the image a Mid-tone "pop" to bring more out the details/contrast.

    Have a nice eve

Hi Sanjeev. Hennie already gave you plenty of food for thought (well done, Hennie!) - I agree on DOF, when shooting portraits with the 500+1.4 combo I try to go for f8 at least.
Colours and exposure look good to me! As does your overall processing - you've come a long way.

    Cool hair-do and nice environment.

Good technique for a portrait, although with a 5D3 I would think you rarely need to drop ISO below 800, or maybe 400. At 160, you've got good SS for this situation, but if he gets up, snarls, yawns or moves at all, it might not be enough. As an experiment, it might be interesting to take two of the same shot, one at ISO 100 and one at ISO 400 and see if you can tell the difference. I can't on my 1D4 and that doesn't have the same full-frame sensor qualities that yours does. Off topic slightly, but might spark some comments from other users. It's fresh in my mind too as I nearly missed the shot of a lifetime the other day because I'd dropped my ISO to 200, and then some action happened and I was only just fast enough to switch back to 800......!! Thoughts from others?

Hi Sanjeev, it's all looking good.

IMHO, again I would have dropped the 1.4x and cropped, you would not have had to do much and no loss of IQ, but for me you need more image below based on the image presented. Good detail & clarity, but adding a little mid tone or expanding the mid tone may help in parts to give more form in the face and define the 'physical' shape more. I would also remove the one or two warmer highlights to the LHS of the face, VWD!

Hi Sanjeev - very nice portrait. We've discussed ISO before and my guess is that you were using Auto. With my 5D3 the only time I use an ISO below 400 is with landscapes. For wildlife I'd much rather have the extra ss or ability to stop down slightly as there is no problem with noise at ISO 400. More often I find myself going to 800 or 1600 to have adequate ss with a longer lens.

    TFS,
    Rachel
