I spend quite a bit of time in the Northern sector of the South Luangwa NP where there are a large number of these grassy dambos. In the golden light of evening, there's nowhere better to be. I have some shots of the whole family together which I might post later, but for now just a Great Kudu Youngster who paused for a second before legging it into the bushes.

Very nice image Ed, I like the colors, the DOF and HA, just a tad more room below would be nice IMO. TFS.

Great light and a handsome animal. The curved tail adds a nice touch.

Such graceful antelope. Lovely pose and light here Edward. I too would have liked just a sliver more below...

Edward, a lovely image in beautiful golden light. Love the colors! Yes, a sliver more at the bottom for me too. Loi

Hi Ed, great light, you are really spoilt.

Nice alert pose, the curved tail is great and I love the Ox P that adds the icing. As you had plenty of SS why f/4, just curious? Agree if you have it on a sliver more below, but no deal breaker if you haven't. Adding some mid tone, or expanding the mid tone in the subject may help bring out more form, structure & detail in the subject.

    Nice one.

Many thanks everyone for your comments. I do have a bit more below since it was a pano crop of the full width of the frame. I have shifted the crop down slightly to give more space for the legs (even if that is something that I would definitely have noticed in someone else's image, seemed to miss it in my own!). I've also lifted the whites slightly and the midtones very slightly and hope this improves it.

Steve - I wanted to make sure that the endless sea of grass was as blurry as possible so that it didn't conflict with the subject. I like that a few grasses are sharp around the Kudu's body but I wanted the rest to be blurry. I could have gone to f5.6 probably, but in good light the AF and sharpness of 1D4 and 500f4 is very good so knew it would work out OK.

Many thanks for feedback. I've learned a lot from this forum in a couple of short months.

With the BKG sufficiently far enough away from the subject I think you could have gone to f/5.6 and let the 500 compress the BKG, still maintaining the look & feel you wanted, however you have achieved what you wanted which is an excellent image. Yep, shoot with the MKIV & 1DX's, however the MKIV has really been retired since the new bodies.

Keep up the great work, enjoy viewing.

I like this very much. It reflects the late evening mood of the African bush. Techs on RP spot on

Hi Ed - beautiful light, love the curved tail and the adjustments to the rp have taken it up a notch though I might like even a sliver more below if you have it.

    Rachel
