    Default Flare Flight

...So I promised more Springbok running and this time one helluva flier with flaring nostrils-I just loved his energy and almost desperate look, almost as if Steve's, or Morkel's cheetahs are chasing him?

Perhaps not my best image but I had to share it- so many great bear, hippo, lion and ellie images lately, I think I will stick to my springboks for now

    EXIF:

    Nikon D3S
    Nikon 500 F4
    F6.3
    ISO 220
    1/2500s

Used VR (thank goodness), bean bag fell off the window onto my lap so this was hand held, all 6 kg or whatever this equipment weighs

    Wishing you a great week-end,

    Hi Gabriella

Love this one! For sure it donīt need to be a predator to rock. This one really is action and photogenic. To my eyes techs and comp is perfect, and I love this color palette.

    Splendid !

fun shot... what was he running from?? or just running for fun?

I quite like the comp, colors, pose, the sharpness is great.

the dust? spots or dirt above him looks like bigger rocks to me and I might remove a few of the largest ones.

Great timing here Gabriela and love the pose, poise and expression!
It feels a wee bit tight for me on the RHS (say I who cut off cheetah shots left, right and centre last week! ) - presume it's edge of frame there?
Did you blur the BG additionally? Or is there a cloud of dust hanging there just behind where the plane of focus falls off abruptly?

Hi Gabriela, looks like you & Morkel keep nailing the action well done, techs look spot on so no problem in getting the shot.

I'm OK on the comp & framing, but again this is to a degree, all down to personal choice . I would expand the mid tones and adjust the highlights/whites. Expanding the mid tones (greater than just apply a mid tone) helps to define more the muscular form of the body/likewise the brighter parts, but those brighter parts do need a tad of taming.

Nice action shot, love the splayed front hooves and flying dirt. Would love to see one of these race the pronghorn we have around here.

Thanks everyone for your constructive criticism and input, I truly appreciate it.

To answer some of your questions above, the springbok was running ahead of the heard and trying to catch up with another male slightly ahead of him. There was indeed a cloud of dust behind my subject(s) and that made it easier for me to process, since there was less detail in the BG and yes Morkel I did blur a bit, only at 20%, from the horns up. I did not remove any of the stones and dirt, I thought they added something extra to this image. There was another character on the RHS, just head and part of the body so I cropped him out and thus avoided cloning. This is another reason why there was so much dust, those two characters were running together -what a show these guys put up, I wish you could see it...

And Steve-Thank You-your advice is always spot on and I shall follow your suggestions, will RP when it's done!

Wishing you all a great week-end,
    Gabriela Plesea

Great image - looks like that place is one to visit. Your photos from there are excellent. (Not that I mean to say that they're excellent just because of where you were!).

Thank you Edward, I do understand what you mean The place is indeed magic and full of surprises, what pains me lately is that - due to heavy advertising - it is becoming overpopulated and also, unfortunately some individuals have very little respect for this unique environment. In terms of photography, something I really like about the place is, there is little vegetation (comparing to other places I have been) and one is often fortunate to have a clean soft BG behind one's subject. Not to mention sunshine and blue skies just about every day! I live about ten minutes' drive from a well known Big 5 Game Reserve but it is not the same, in the summer the vegetation is so lush and the trees so thick with leaves, that spotting a lion or a leopard requires great skill and patience, as well as perseverance and time. I lack the time, unfortunately.

You too are fortunate to live in a beautiful place, lots of opportunities for great photography. Hopefully I will be able to visit that part of the world some day

Warmest regards and once again thank you for your comments,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Gabriela - sorry, I was away for a long weekend. Excellent action capture. I really like the pov and the kicked up dust adds. I agree with Morkel on just wanting a slight amount more room on the rhs. As always Steve has offered sage advice on tweaks that will take this excellent image over the top. Keep 'em coming!

    TFS,
    Rachel
