For birders and bird photographers, visiting Nome, Alaska is a dream. I went there this spring with Matthew Studebaker and was treated to the best week of bird photography of my life. Here is one of Nome's "musts", a bar-tailed godwit.

    Grace:

Good shooting angle, strong sense of environment without overpowering the bird, well exposed. Minor point, would prefer the grass across the breast to not be there, but not a deal breaker.

    Nome sounds like a winner.

    Cheers

Gorgeous! And the colors of the setting are perfect for the bird -- designer color-coordination!

Hi Grace. Nice habitat shot. Beautiful colours on the bird. I would personally prefer if there was no blurring of the grass in front of the bird (but not a biggie). TFS

I think you've done a great job, Grace, with making this bird stand out in a difficult environment. I hadn't even noticed that grass until I read Randy's post. Image came together nicely in every way.

Hi Grace, love the soft light in this, and you have brought out the detail on the godwit so well, tack sharp too. All the earthy browns work so well together. Well captured.

Thanks everyone. Randy, agree about stray grass, but c'est la vie.

Wonderful IQ on the godwit, and I love the dry grass habitat. Colours are tied in beautifully too. Love this type of subdued light. You could enhance the reflection in the eye a bit, but overall this is a winner for sure!
