I spent a morning at the bird hide at Lake Panic near Skukuza in the Kruger National Park recently. Many a bird photographer has spent time at this well known hide in the Kruger Park capturing the variety of animal and bird activities there. Given the hide's popularity, it is difficult to capture a unique photo and the resident breeding Grey Herons are no exception. I spent the morning trying to capture them in flight and was unable to get a bird flying towards me, but like this one for the clarity on the eye, the dark blue wings set against a greyish BG and the fact that it was carrying reeds in its beak. Next time, perhaps I'll try to get a panning effect of one of these graceful birds.

Nikon D3S with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens at 1/2000; f2,8; ISO of 900 & a focal length of 200mm. Very little conversion work done in Lightroom but I did run Morkel Erasmus' sharpening preset in Photoshop over the image.

The shooting angle is not the best as it is flying away from you. The nesting material in the beak still makes it interesting.

The image is well exposed, sharp, and features a beautiful BG and the nesting material is a nice bonus. Too bad the subject is flying away from us though...

    Hope to see more!
