    Default Stygian Owl

Here's one from my trip to Cuba in April, taken in Bermejas, not far from the lovely Bahia de Cochinos. I struggled to find a vantage point that gave me an almost clear view through the foliage and also gave me a tree to brace against, but the bird was cooperative and sat still while I crashed around in the woods beneath him. One of three owl species that day, two of them endemic to Cuba although this one is not. C&C appreciated.

    D7000, 80-400VR @ 400mm, ISO 1250, 1/320s @ f/6.3 manual. ( I tried a few with fill flash but this one in ambient light turned out better.)

Hi Bill, an owl species I havent seen before, and glad that most of him was in an opening of the surrounding foliage. Love the raised ear tufts and yellow eye rings. A vertical was the only way to go.

Very nice looking owl. Those orange eyes with huge black pupils are really drawing in the attention

Composition is good for me and the bird really stands out against the green background

    Great effort and TFS

That is a striking owl and you did very well getting a shot considering what you were dealing with. The owl is strong in this image despite the busy environment. I think you did well.

    This is awesome Bill.
I really like the relatively clear view that you have achieved and the feeling of the environment you included. not distracting at all.
A really unusual owl with the close-set ears.
    I like it!

    Wow love those eyes.
I don't mind the busy environment as the eyes really draw your attention to the birds head all the time.

what a gorgeous creature, nicely done and lucky you. I like everything except for some reason I think he might look better placed a little to the right in the frame and get rid of some of the OOF stuff on the right in the process, all the greenery on the left in this image in focus works well for this one.

What a great looking Owl and you did a great job capturing it. Ditto the others on the BG not being distracting. Techs look good too. Well done Bill.

The image works remarkably well despite the busy surroundings...the eyes are so big, clear and sharp that they are the first thing we see upon viewing the image. I like it lots!
