    Default Humpback Whales

I thought I'd change it up a bit and post another whale image. Taken in the waters around Svalbard, Norway. The whales were very playful, including approaching the boat several times. They also passed through the column of shimmering light several times, including here. This is in color by the way. We would know where they were going to surface based on the swarming birds.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

Hi Rachel - Amazing image Rachal. I just love the spray of droplets with the gulls around and about. Very nice composition with a lot of interesting content to browse through. The "cut-ooff" gulls on the lhs had my thinking of removing them, but when I looked again I think they add to the mayhem.

Hi Rachel, this is certainly different, and what I mean by different is, it's very busy compared to what we normally see.

I like the chaos, light, spray, blown whites and flocking/feeding frenzy of the birds. Cropped birds are always going to happen with an image like this, nothing you can do, but your call as to wether they are eliminated or kept, but I would loose the single wing on the whale RHS edge. I wonder if adding an overall mid tone adjustment, then a channels/curves (to emphasis the darks) would help? Will send you something as I'm working from the laptop as you know.

    HI Rachel,

very nice image, love the traffic in there very much. With the Highlights blow in the upper left corner there is not much to do. Glad that you got close to them. We had not the chance for that.

    Have a great week

    Ciao

Look at the size of that tail compared to those gulls. This pic certainly lets you get an idea of the magnitude of these whales

Thanks everybody. It was amazing to see and definitely interesting to see the birds flocking even if they got in the way . I certainly did not have the same issue when photographing humpbacks in Alaska.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel
