Took this image of a warthog who had just defeated a foe in a brief battle minutes before and is now watching the other walk off. He is in his prime and has a good pair of tusks on him.

Quite an impressive looking animal. I would give him a bit more space on bottom if you have it.

Hi Carl, I really rate these guys, full of character and feisty too, and IMHO quite often over looked at times as a photographic source. So, lets see if we can 'beef up' some feedback for you then

The 3/4 profile is good as you get to see the whole body, just not wild about the angle, however a pain for all of us when shooting from a vehicle. Techs look good and you had enough SS to carry the shot. Overall I do feel it's a tad too contrasty, backing off on the contrast, less so on shadows & blacks brings a bit more detail out. I would also just try to tweak that WB a bit more with the eye dropper, you know what you are looking for from previous threads, if not I'm sure Andre/Gabriela can point you in the right direction, lets get them working with you . You could then, and depending on your recollection perhaps adjust the red in Curves to either drop it a fraction or a bit more & go colder, no big deal, just a thought. lastly and depending on your ethics, I would remove the two white stones and the blue ones, again no deal breaker.

Rather than RP I'll send you my thoughts that's if you want to explore my suggestions, you then have a visual reference.

Thanks Gen. Unfortunately it was captured that way in camera but I did think it was a possibility and may experiment with adding a bit on.

Thanks a stack for the email Steve.
Just wondering why you not wild about the angle. I am asking as I have a few of him side on but chose this as it seems to offer more of a 3D look and shows off his ivory a bit better.

I obviously went wrong somewhere with the WB as I now, always check that first thing in LR and try and work from there. Its one of the first things you taught me . I remember checking it again in one area during my workflow.

As for it being a bit contrasty - I spent some time looking at different possibilities changing the BG and subject (not to different to your examples you sent me) and settled for the more contrasty look to get a bit more out of the image but also not entirely happy with the decision. Having seen your versions is helping tremendously as I feel I need to grasp the shadow and blacks and to trust my instincts a bit more. I can now see how your changes brought out the detail a lot more.

Andre and Gabriela have been REALLY BUSY in the Kalahari lately as you know but I will catch up with them soon for all the stories. Thanks Steve

Hi Carl, it's just than 'angle' looking down I'm not a lover of, but that's just me.

Yep A&G are back so, as you say, they will update you with the 'larks' they had soon. Now I'm off to drive 200 miles, talk later.

    cheers

Hi Carl - I too like the pose and the placement in frame but agree it's tight on the bottom. You've got nice texture and detail but I agree with Steve that it's a bit contrasty. Hopefully, you'll do a repost after applying Steve's suggestions.

Also it would be great if you would participate in other threads. We recommend that you comment on 5 other images each time you post one of your own. It helps create a feeling of community and we can all learn from each other. It doesn't have to be technical, just what you like or don't like about an image.

    TFS,
    Rachel

I hope this is a better version than my OP . I worked on lessening contrast and adjusting WB. It is still lacking a bit more detail I think.

    Thanks

Hi Carl - unfortunately for me this now looks too thin, somewhere in between the 2 posts would be best.

Tough looking beast with some impressive tusks. I like how the mane along the back stands out against the skin. Don't mind the slightly down ward angle as it seems a natural view if you were to come across one out on a walk through the bush (I imagine that probably wouldn't be a good idea). No where near the PP expertise of our moderators but since I don't ever get to process my own warthog pics, I gave this one a go from your RP. Some selective dodging and burning, some NR to smooth out the ground detail, and a little selective sharpening on the hog. No worries if not to your taste and you'd like the mods to delete.

Hi Carl! Indeed great tusks and great pose and the crop is great I do agree with the comments above and it looks like Steve Canuel's RP is spot on.

Great work Carl, love this proud warthog and the winner look on his face

We'll see you tomorrow, looking forward to some more PP talk

    Have a great evening,

Wonderful shot of this amazing species. I like the first version posted the most - for me the colors look best there.
I would prefer a tiny bit more space at the bottom but this is just a very minor thing.
