Default Advice on Buying a Used Canon 1DX

I'm yearning for a 1DX but can't afford to buy a new one. I'm saving up to buy a used one sometime in the next few months but have heard about the AF problems with some of them, and wonder what is the best way to go about buying a used one. Is there a serial number series I should avoid? Any particular questions I should ask the person selling the camera? Anything to watch out for? I would very much appreciate any thoughts.

Melissa, you might also consider buying your used body from a reputable dealer (e.g. KEH, B&H, Adorama, etc.). It will cost you more than you might pay from an individual, but will still be less expensive than buying new and it would come with a warranty.

    Hi Melissa,
off topic here but love your work just returned from Africa specifically Botswana and South Africa focusing in the elephants and their habitat for Nat. Geo. I live in NY and would love to chat sometime. Very interested in your work for our monthly photo salon here in the city...

The 1DX seems to be a pretty rare beast in the used market. I can only speak for UK sites, but I reckon I've seen a single used 1DX and that was all but market price being listed as unused. Heck, even the mark IV only seems to crop up sporadically before being sold quickly. However, there seems to be a constantly supply of III. I wonder people are going from 1DIV plus a III as a backup, to 1DX and the IV becoming the second body?

Right now Canon has a refurbished 1DX in stock for $5,439 which is really great especially if your state has no sales tax. They also recently changed their warranty on refurbished to 1 year too.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts. Artie, sorry I missed those! Though truth be told it's going to take me a couple months to save up the money anyway.

If you are not afraid to purchase out of the country. A new 1DX in Thailand now is $6122.
I buy from these guys all the time. First class gear heads. Huge inventory. By far the largest professional dealer in Thailand.
You might even get them to throw in a VAT refund? If so new will cost you $5,754. Thought I would add. This is not a store discount. It is Canon factory discount. Actually the Canon factory shop told me about it. Same as the 5D III. Price at all shops here is about 26-2700 dollars. Canon corp. price.
