    Default Zebra

I am reviewing some images I took a few years ago. This is from Etosha National Park in Namibia. I really enjoyed Etosha and stayed in each of the three inside camps. My husband and I had a rented car and sometimes I really wished we had a open jeep for more freedom of viewing.

    Canon 40D, Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS, 1/350, f4, ISO 400

    C & C most appreciated.

Not one of your best Nancy, if you don't mind me saying so, however that magic last light colour takes this up a notch.

Hi Nancy - It's always good to revisit images as our pp skills improve. I like the walking pose but would prefer a little more room at the bottom for the zebra to walk into. While it looks like you had nice soft light, I feel like the reds and magentas are too strong. If it were mine I would drop the reds slightly and the magenta more so. Also the blacks of the zebra are choked up a bit so it is lacking detail (particularly evident in the mane), you may be able to open them up a bit in the RAW.

    TFS,
    Rachel

I love how the zebra stands out sharp against the softer BG. Would love to see a RP with Rachel's suggestions.

The lovely soft light gives this a very warm and gentle feel Nancy. But i feel that if you took away that pink glow the photo would be quite ordinary, without any real richness to the colours.

Hi Nancy, I would agree with Marc about the IQ of the image, but I would temper that as I guess it was at an early stage of your photography and you have come along way since then in both terms of knowledge and kit.

If you have it, then I would move the whole crop down so you have more space at the foot of the image. I do like the 3/4 angle as you see clearly the subject and the habitat typifies the location. Looking at the image I doesn't appear that the blacks are clipped, just very dark. looking at the techs you needed more DOF & SS, the 40D was quite a good camera for it's time, but I would have reservations about going over ISO 800. The colour I like as it portrays a 'closing' day, however if you balance the WB you get a different picture, WDYT?

Nancy, I like what Steve has achieved with your image.
I think the colours look much more natural and the overall image is much sharper and punchy, whilst still retaining enough of the loveley evening light.

Thank you all for your insightful comments. I have lots and lots of images from this visit to Etosha and most are like this. Now that I am older & wiser I need to go back and obtain better images ! Steve, I like the repost. I didn't think of WB when I started to process. No more space at the bottom.

Those are some wicked looking thorn bushes! I like the simple animal in habitat shots like this. Can't comment with experience on the color difference between the two posts but maybe a touch warmer on Steve's?

Preferred the colours on OP even if quite pink. I think it's close to natural with perhaps a little artistic licence and I don't see harm in that. The compsition is a tough one, but i think it would have made all the difference if the zebra has his head up a bit - not looking at camera, but just a bit more alert. As a discussion of WB, it's interesting though.
