    Default Toned Harrier

This is a quad-tone image created in Topaz Adjust. The filter is lurking in the "Film Collection" under "Bleach Bypass Warm". The harrier hunts very close to the ground, sometimes even lower than the surrounding grass as seen in this capture.

    Kerry,

Greetings. Was it your idea for the theme? I'm trying to understand the terms duo-, tri-, quad-tone. In your image I can see blue, red, white & black. Is that what is meant my quad-tone? From the descriptions I've read on the web duo-tone includes white, black and a shading of a particular hue, but perhaps I'm confused.

Anyway, it has an interesting effect on the nice spread tail image of the harrier. Wish the back of the neck and head were more defined. The image has a dynamic feel that I really like. Thanks for posting.

    Cheers,

    -Michael-

Michael, yes the toned image theme was my idea. We have done it before, and it always generates discussion. Toning is a process of assigning a limited number (2, 3, 4, etc.) of colors (tones) to a corresponding number of luminance ranges of an image. Not like pseudo-color, as you know, but an artistic process of treating the shades of black and white in an image. While black and white are technically "tones", they are sometimes used but more typically only pastel colors and black is often used when you get to tri-tone and quad-tone images. This particular image has three pastel tones and black to make up the quad. When creating a tone map from scratch or tweaking an existing one, you select each color and assign it a place in the tonal range.

I assume the Split Toning feature in LR / ACR counts? You have to move the Saturation sliders before anything happens -- a little tricky the first time you try it, but very straightforward.

Wait -- I asked this before -- but I can't remember what I asked... I think you said Split Toning isn't the same as duotone, etc. Ignore my comment above.

Diane, split toning is fine. It just means that the image is a duo-tone image with two colors. I think you had asked about straight b&w images or IR, I can't remember either!

Heaven only knows what you're going to get on this one, but it will be an interesting adventure! Good thing it doesn't have to fit any known box...

Nice comp and lovely tones, Kerry. And thanks to all the questions/comments about this week's theme. Appreciate it.

Beautiful image, Kerry. I've always had a hard time wrapping my head around the nuances of split-toning, quad tones, etc.
